Silver Cross Simplicity Car Seat for Newborns

Morning All

I'm a first time mum to be and looking for advice. 31 weeks today

I have purchased the silver cross simplicity car seat and wondering if I need to buy a newborn insert for it for Baby when it's born?!

I've seen online inserts you buy that looks like it protects their head making them look less 'small' in their seat - is this needed for the simplicity car seat?!

If states it has a newborn wedge included so I'm unsure?!xx

Hi! Also FTM with a Silvercross Simplicity and was puzzled by the same thing. Though I'm quite sure it does come with everything you need. Unlike other brands, the headrest part is not removable, however the seating space is made larger or smaller with the "newborn insert" under their bottom. If you look under the 5point belt, there's a small removable wedge cushion connected by two snap buttons.

I tested out the seat using a newborn babysuit (50cm) and it seems to fit perfectly. Was quite shocked how large a newborn actually is...I initially thought the space was far too big and I'd definitely need an extra insert but it looks very cosy especially with the extra wedge cushion on the bottom.

No you don't need an insert and one doesn't exist but in my opinion, it should have one - DD's head only really feels protected now she's much older at nearly 5 months. I had to hold her head coming home from the hospital because it was falling about everywhere.

Not to sound really awful but if you can change it, do it now because it's not a good car seat at all. There are plenty of bad reviews online about that I wish I read before. We have it because we have the pram (as I assume you do) and I wish we'd never bought it, DD has never seemed comfortable in it (the straps don't move), she hates the car seat and I've never felt fully comfortable with her in it. We're at a point now where I'm going to swap it for the Joie 360 spin, even though she still has plenty more room in it.

We have the Simplicity as well.

It was fine- lasted for about 11 months and dd always seemed comfortable in it. She’s always been great in the car, and would fall asleep in about 5 seconds flat once the car got moving.

It does well in safety reviews as well- it’s a Which? Best Buy.

The only thing I’d say would be that it’s a bit heavy, but it wasn’t a big enough bug bear for me to replace it when dc2 arrives.

You don't need an insert but I didn't feel DD was particularly comfortable until she was bigger. She loved it from about 3 months though, and stayed in it until around 15 months as she's not the biggest.

I liked the car seat overall and putting it straight on the pram was incredibly helpful. However, it's very heavy compared to those my friends had and doesn't have much of a hood so you need something extra if using it on the pram in poorer weather.

I agree with a PP who suggested changing it. I really didn't like it- DS was small and never seemed safe or comfortable in it. I ended up getting rid of it and buying a different one, shockingly I can't remember what it was now but it was much better and we were both happier with it!

Thanks for the advice!!

Least I know I don't need to buy an insert!! ☺️

The car seat was gifted to us along with the pram so don't really want to return!! A lot of people I know has the simplicity car seat that's why I was delighted with the gift!! But thanks for the advice anyway!!

my pram wheels only take that car seat (Silver Cross) and didn't really want to be buying/getting a different car seat and chassis when the pram takes up enough room as it is!!xx

Yeah it's a very nice gift.

Obviously it's completely up to the individual and everyone differs. There is 5 of us with it at baby group and 3 don't like it. I just personally wouldn't choose it again if I ever had another (which is unlikely!). I think I was just sucked in by the Silver Cross name!

I have however learned from this thread to take out the wedge which I've just done and she seems to be in it a little better.

Congratulations and good luck with everything Smile

we wondered the same thing. Our 5 week old's head doesn't seem particularly well supported in the seat. I thought I had just done something wrong but I think it's just how the seat is.
