Sweep?

Just wondering if anyone else finds inconsistency with when midwives will perform sweeps? With my first they gave me one at about 38+4. And now with this pregnancy the midwife I just saw said they won't even consider it until 41 weeks? Just wondering what other peoples experiences have been.

I'm surprised you had one at 38+4. For first time mums it should be 40 weeks (unless agreed by obstetric team) and for 2nd + mums 41 weeks

Yep 41 weeks for second or more in my area if done by community midwife. However I did have one at 39 +6 in hospital last week as I was there for something else and consultant said I could have if I wanted. Think it depends on who you ask/see as well, as consultant i saw before that said no I couldn’t have it before 41 weeks.
When in hospital I asked the midwife on the ward who said they (doctors) all have differing opinions on sweeps! One Dr said no, other said yes. then midwife in hospital said yes and did it, community midwifes said no. Talk about confusing!!!

I had one at 38 weeks. i went for a growth scan and the consultant decided that I should be induced on my due date and they offered me a sweep there and then to see if it helped to start things off

Really interesting to hear other people's experiences. The inconsistency drives me crazy!! So unpredictable and kind of frustrating!

I had one at 39+6 by community midwives - my due date was a Saturday though, and I was under a very busy team.
I've also heard it's usually from 40 weeks for a first baby, later for subsequents. There seems to be a bit of variation on how strict they are though, other people I spoke to at the time on here had to wait until they were 40 weeks exactly.

So as an update...I saw a consultant yesterday (I hemorrhaged in delivery with my first born) and she happily did a sweep for me at 38+6...so who knows! All down to who you are speaking to, I think! x

I had a sweep at 37 weeks with my first baby and I was already 2cms dilated.

I had a sweep at 39+5 weeks with my first baby as I'd been into AAU three times for reduced movement so it's procedure. Went into labour the next day!
