How long should bleeding last after birth?

Just wondering how long people bled for after giving birth, I’m on day 15 now and again this morning it was quite heavy. Straight after it was extremely heavy to point I was soaking thru pads/bed and when went to change was dripping when I moved, midwifes weren’t concerned but I had a few clots later on and was sent for a scan and was told they could see about 1cm placenta left inside but it should clear by antibiotics but the bleeding is still continuing and I just expected it to be tailing off by now?

You need to be seen again asap

Is this not normal to be bleeding this long then?

Its not the length that matters its the heaviness

It sounds as though you are bleeding too heavy
Please ring the triage unit and let them know how heavy it is
Your body could be trying to expel the placenta piece itself and you sound as youve lost a lot of blood

By day 15 I was definitely down to light period level so I would be phoning 111 if you're soaking through pads.

Mine was about 4 weeks - though very light by that point, so you may have some time yet.

The heaviness does sound like it should be checked out though.

Agree you need to be checked out OP. My bleeding lasted a few weeks but by two weeks I could get away with a panty liner.

4 - 6 weeks is normal for bleeding length, but what is worrying is how heavy yours is - that isn't normal.

Taylor22 · 30/07/2018 12:57

I bled heavy for 4 months. I was fine. But you need to be checked.

I was told some women bleed for up to six months (for me was 3 months) but agree if they haven't rechecked that the placenta is all gone you definitely need to be checked. I'm surprised they didn't plan a follow up appointment.
