Childbirth after lletz

About a year after the birth of my first child, I had lletz procedure due to CIN3. Fast forward 2 years and im 20 weeks with my second. A fews ago my consultant said they took quite a large section away and they would monitor my cervix length. So far no concerns.

I'm just wondering though if anyone has experience of childbirth after lletz? I've been told there are 2 possible outcomes - either I will go into labour but not progress past a certain stage (due to scarring on my cervix) and have to get a c section. Or it could be a straightforward birth not affected by any scarring on my cervix, and I'll dilate as normal.

I had a vaginal birth first time round and the thought of c section really worries me (recovery etc). Also worried about how long I would have to be in labour before they decide Im not going to progress any further.

Would love to hear any experiences!!

I had lletz for cin2 and fell pregnant a year later with my second child.

I had trouble bleeding in the pregnancy, and had regular scans for this, in case there was some sort of placenta tearing.

I always had a feeling I wouldn't go full term, so breathed a sigh of relief at certain milestones, 24 weeks for example.

Eventually, my waters broke at 35 weeks and I gave birth that morning. I got to 8cm dilated within 4 hours, but then got a space for EMCS because I had a really bad forceps delivery with my first child and did't want to risk that all over again. Id previously had an agreed booked ELCS, so no one argued about it.

Nobody said the LLETZ caused the bleed all through pregnancy or made the baby come early, but I felt it was the reason as there seemed no other explanation and I didn't have any of that with my first child (before LLETZ).

Oh, and I remember getting the cervical length done at my request - I think it was an internal ultrasound scan, which came back ok.

Thanks for sharing @JollyDay. Glad it all went well. I had bleeding very early on too, no more since about 10 weeks thankfully. They measured by cervix at 16 weeks but will not measure again until 28 weeks - which seems to me like a big gap!

Yeah, to be honest I didn’t feel enough was done to check up on my cervix either! I decided in the end to keep a close watch myself, and if all else fails ask for a stitch to be placed if the bleeding got worse, which obviously I didn’t need in the end, so perhaps that proves them right? The scans became more frequent as the pregnancy progressed, which was a small comfort I guess.

If someone gets a cervical stitch is it removed before labour or just left to tear free?

JollyDay · 06/05/2018 12:11

When I was pregnant I looked into it and they removed them at something like 35 weeks (when it's ok for baby to make an appearance!)

I had a lletz a 3 years before 1st baby.
Was seen under consultant care and I remember being told "Oh, I see it was stagec3 cin and they took quite a chunky
Not the words you want to hear!
Anyway, I had three extra scans to check cervical length and was just the right side of normal range.
No issues in pregnancy, and I fully dilated.
Birth ended up in thetre with forceps but this was not related to previous lletz.

Am now pregnant with #2 and saw consultant after 12 week scan who confirmed that the issues I had in labour and birth were nothing to do with previous surgery and she has also given me the go ahead for midwife led care this time and no need for cervix checking scans.

Good luck OP

Thank you! Keeping my fingers crossed I progress as normal once the time comes

I had 2 dcs after llezt. Both were completely normal births.

I fell pregnant nine months after lletz, had on off bleeding until 13 weeks, was under a consultant for something else and mentioned the bleeding. They started checking my cervical length from 21 weeks. It made pregnancy a bit stressful as my cervix shortened at 24 weeks, but went full term in the end with some help and progressed quickly in labour, DD arrived just five hours after my first contraction.

HopeAndJoy16 · 07/05/2018 04:44

I had lletz for CIN3 in 2013. I had a normal birth last year. I had no cervical length checks (I think in my local trust they don't do them unless you've had multiple treatments) but all was fine. I dilated very quickly, but don't think that was due to the treatment.

To the PP who mentioned cervical stitches- they are removed in late pregnancy.

I had Iletz and had two completely normal pregnancies but two very fast labours, I dilated 0-10 in 2 hours with the first and more quickly with the second. My OB said this could have been due to the "damage" caused to my cervix by the iletz. I was pretty delighted tbh!

I had cin 3 and lletz about 4 months before I became pregnant. Had bleeding throughout but no one seemed to mention there was a connection. I had a very fast labour (woke up with a bleed and was 10cm 2 hours later) which the midwife later said was down to my incompetent cervix due to the procedure.
