Hi all, so am overdue by a day. I was offered a sweep last week at 39 weeks, which I decided to go for. I had a 3 day labour with my son as I dilated so slowly and had trouble as he was a big baby so they said they would get consent from consultant for me to have a sweep before due date to help things along this time with 2nd baby.

Unfortunately the sweep just made me have an uncomfortable night and by the following day I was back to normal. Midwife said my cervix was soft, one bit was still quite firm (which she tugged at with my permission shudder) and I was not dilated.

I have been offered a second sweep at my midwife appt tomorrow afternoon, however I'm not sure whether to go for it? Main reasons being my partner is working away in London until Saturday afternoon, obviously he would leave straight away at first sign. It is a 2 hour drive home.

Also second reason - I am leaning more to thinking that if she's not ready to come a sweep isn't going to do anything other than make me uncomfortable like last time? Especially with a toddler to run around after.

Has anyone had a successful sweep after due date? I keep thinking it may be more effective now I'm overdue?

Also how long they will leave you before induction? Is it 42 weeks? Really want her to come on her own accord ideally but Will think maybe I should have gone for it if I do have to be induced! Argh! Will discuss all this with midwife tomorrow but just want as much info and people's experiences before I head off and make decision tomorrow as I'm so undecided?

Talk it through with AIMS?

Ask for your Bishops score before consenting to induction?

You still have 13 days to go before teaching term if you are in the UK.

I had a sweep at 11am when I was 40+1 and my waters broke at 8pm that evening. My previous sweep a week earlier didn't work and just gave me 2 days of Braxton Hicks.

Your partner working away isn't necessarily ideal at full term anyway (no criticism, I'm sure he'd be at home if he had the choice!), you could go into labour at any time without the sweep.

My midwife had told me they would arrange an appointment for 40+10 to discuss being induced if I hadn't gone into labour by then, but I don't know if that varies by area.

Good luck, I hope your labour goes well and is a little quicker than the last one!
