5 weeks postpartum, now bleeding bright red blood

Hi everyone,

It'll be 6 weeks on Wednesday since I gave birth. Forceps delivery and 2 tears but I've healed well. DTD with DH for the first time since on Friday - all fine. My lochia bleeding had just about stopped last week.

Last night I got up to feed DS and some blood leaked out, went to the loo and saw it was quite a lot and bright red. The same thing happened 4 hours later when I was up with DS again. Now I'm bleeding exactly like a heavy period, except its all bright red blood not pinky or browny like the usual lead up, also I am in no pain at all - no cramps, nothing.

Should I call 111, or see if I could see a doctor? Just thinking it could be my period and then I'll look silly.

Are you bf? That can set your lochia off again or dtd might have...um...jiggled everything setting it off again. If you have no temp & your not in awful pain I'd give it 'til later in the day before calling the gp. It is normal to think it's stopped only for it to come back. *Disclaimer, that's me & what I'd do, I'm not medically trained, if you think something is wrong get checked.

@BernardsarenotalwaySaints No i'm FF and have since birth. Maybe it was DTD that did it like you say. Forgot to mention I also lost almost 2L of blood during labour so seeing all this red blood worried me a little although I'm sure my body is restocked by now.

Thanks for your advice, I think I will see how it goes today like you say.

Hi, I'm not sure if it's the same as I've never had a natural birth ( 4 c sections) but from my experience I've had this after all pregnancies. When I thought my bleeding had eased off, a couple of weeks later I woke up to bright red blood. I thought it was my period but it stopped after a day. Probably your body still clearing itself out but if you're concerned see your GP.

Also, if you haven't already had your 6 week check with the doctor you could just mention it then.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 05/03/2018 10:03

I think closeness & cuddling baby can still set it off. I've no idea how long it takes your body to rebalance after a large loss but can definitely see why it worried you! I meant to say in my first post if you're going through 1 pad an hour or less do see the gp.

I had similar after my DS, I went to the doctor and I got antibiotics because it was an infection/endometriosis. Get it checked to be on the safe side

TabbyMack · 05/03/2018 10:07

I think it might be your period. I FF from birth and my period came around 5 weeks later.

BeyondDeadlySiren · 05/03/2018 10:11

I breastfed both DCs and with both my period returned two weeks after my lochia had stopped. Same for my sister. Some people are just very unlucky Grin

But of course if you have any reason to be concerned, do call a dr. They won't think you are being silly Flowers

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 05/03/2018 10:30

With all 5 of mine they came back at 3 months pp (pretty much to the day). I've fully ff, combi fed & fully bf. I was really pissed off.

Had same 4 weeks in. Was a secondary PPH caused by endometritis. See your GP x
