Bath after c-section

Hi - does anyone have any advice about when I can safely bathe post c-section?

Obviously I’ve been showering but my SPD is still bothering me and I’ve got really unpleasant trapped wind and I feel like a hot bath would help.

Has anyone got up to date advice about how long I have to wait?

The midwife gave me the okay 5 days after ds was born by emcs. Told me not to stay in too long, get dh to help me get out and make sure I dried myself thoroughly. She did check the wound first though. I had zero issues. That was in 2015.

I left it a few weeks but I’m sure that was erring a lot on the side of caution.

I suppose the twin dangers are wound opening and getting in/out?

How far pp are you? Has the wound been sealed for a few days?

I’m 2 weeks post op now. I might wait and ask the doctor as I’m seeing them on Tuesday. Thanks everyone.

I think I bathed about a week after to allow time to heal. I love baths and didn't want to wait longer - midwife said ok. Re wind peppermint oil capsules worked well for me. There are some yoga moves too but might not be ok after section. Best wishes for your recovery!

I also waited 5 days in 2015
My mum helped me in and out. (Which I couldn't have done without her.)
She also got me to put a clean folded length wise over my scar to give it the support just while I was bending.
I never had spd though and I know this is awful.

Two weeks is fine (I’m a midwife).

Merryoldgoat · 28/02/2018 18:36

Thank you Tayto

And thank you MrsJosh! Running a bath now!

I found bathing made my stitches really hurt even after I had healed. I would wait.

Merryoldgoat · 28/02/2018 18:38

Oh really Grey? I’m a bit conflicted now

My spd still bothers me and I have birth 2.5 years back! So much for it going at birth...

What I did find helpful was seeing an osteopath (which i had previously considered as woo) whobspecilaosed in pregnancy. She sorted me out in two sessions- really the first was just a light time up then the second she did this frankly terrifying thing to my Si joint. Bloody awful but it worked. I improved about 80% and I’d been suffering for a year.

fruityb · 28/02/2018 18:47

I had a bath in Badedas about a week after. It was bliss.

Merryoldgoat · 28/02/2018 18:50

Kochab - it’s hideous isn’t it?

It went immediately with my first but it’s tsking longer to resolve this time. I sleeping on the sofa as I can’t toletate the bed and it’s really bad for my mental health at the moment.

It’s been a hard few months.

It’s hideous.

If it’s not going by now it’s possible there’s an underlying joint issue. Try to get some treatment - the pelvic partnership website has a list of practitioners across the UK. Personally I’d avoid chiropractic - what you need is a hands on physio or osteo who is willing to ‘adjust’ (or in the case of my charming French osteo, jump on you in a move that would make a wrestler queasy...) 😁

Far too much shit that women are told is normal/put up with it during and after pregnancy. SPD is treatable. My sessions cost 70 quid each (yikes) but money well spent. I’ll be going back to her soon as I’m pregnant again and starting to have the same issues

MadAssHatter · 28/02/2018 19:02

I think I bathed about four days after my section. As soon as I could get in the bath really. Not too hot and with salt water. I had one most days.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 28/02/2018 22:25

Dissolvable stitches will have dissolved by day 14 post-op! No reason not to have a bath!

Uhohmummy · 01/03/2018 19:47

I am 3 weeks post section and have a bath most days. My midwife said it was fine after about a week but I waited until 10 days after for the first one. I don’t stay in too long - maybe 15 mins.
