Injections after birth - what did YOU do?

Vitamin K for baby, very recommended by midwife at birth class but discredited in hypnobirthing book.

Same with the injection to encourage a quick delivery of the placenta after birth...

Also with the above injection, can anyone recall it being bigger than usual? Watched a recommended positive birth story yesterday and the injection was a whopper!

Kind of feel pressured to have both, but would love to know what everyone else did/thinks xx

We had both. I have no recollection of the size of the injection if im honest, I was cuddling the baby at the time so focused on that.

Baby had vit K and I had the one for the placenta. After pushing a baby out I wasnt fussed by an injection. Cant even remember it

I really didn't want the injection for the placenta but waited an hour and nothing happened so opted for the jab. It was actually a lot less worse than I thought it would be. In fact, it was absolutely fine. The chord had turned freezing cold and was making me chilly and I was just keen to finish up by that point tbf.

Can't comment on the vitamin k. I just opted for the jab for Ds without second thought

Same her, I have no recollection of the needle size for the placenta injection.

I do remember being given an anti-emetic during labour as I kept being sick. And was aware of that because the midwife decide to jab me halfway through a contraction and I remember being really angry that she was adding to my pain!

Are you intending to give vitamin k orally instead?

You won’t notice the injection! I’ve had to have it each time to reduce my risk of bleeding. If I wasn’t at risk I might have skipped it, I think it’s personal preference if you are not known to be at risk.

Baby had vit k injection. Because, for me, the risks outweigh the benefit.
Didn’t have the placenta jab as that was the surgeons responsibility during my section.

Vitamin k - yes. It's quick and simple.
Placenta delivery - entirely up to you. If the mw thinks there is a problem they will advise you to have it. After my first birth the placenta was retained so I had the injection with dd2. After labour, you don't really notice an injection! Few more contractions and the placenta was quickly delivered. The mw did not cut the cord for a while either which I was happy about.

We gave oral vitamin K to both. First time I avoided injection for placenta. Second time placenta wouldn't come out (v v short labour and midwife said body had gone into a sort of shock). Had injection placenta eventually came out, so avoided going on B hospital (was in nice separate MLU).

We gave baby vitamin k orally. And I asked for time to deliver the placenta naturally. It came out in ten or twenty minutes

Yes to what a pp mentioned about the cold cord. After all the pain of labour I was really annoyed that the cord dangling out of me was cold and uncomfortable!

Both mine had the vitamin K injection. I am very much pro vaccination - live in a developing country - and my 2 have had every jab going.
No injection for me as had two sections.

You can get vit k in liquid given in syringe for baby which we did as didn't want to give an injection. if bottle feeding you get 2 amounts 1 at birth 1 at 1 week after. If Breastfeeding the extra one a month after birth.

The placenta injection i didn't want but due to long pushing stage and loosing blood with episotomy?!sp they said it was best to have injection with 1st DD I didn't notice it at all that time.

Second DD didnt have the Injection and was fine as well.

I didn't want the placenta injection, as I wanted to leave the cord attached as long as possible and birth placenta naturally. Unfortunately DD wasn't breathing when born and cord had to be cut immediately so she could go into resusitation. I had the injection as at that point I didn't give a damn about myself and just wanted to be with her. Luckily she came round before she left the room, thank God!

We decided against vitamin k, however I spent the first few weeks a bit worried I hadn't given her it and it did cause me some stress. I'm due my next baby in a few months and think we will opt for vitamin k this time, although probably oral.

Do you mean you’d prefer your baby to have oral vitamin K rather than the injection? That’s available too, although I think it’s less effective in preventing problems.
If you are worried about the pain aspect of injection for a newborn, all my DC’s had the vit K injection and I don’t think they even noticed (certainly less painful than the heal-prick test, which isn’t particularly pleasant but is very important to do).

Injection for placenta was given o me without consent with my first baby. I was very annoyed about that. With my second I wanted a natural third stage and for the cord to be intact for as long as seemed reasonable at the time and I thought the injection would hurry the process. In the event, the placenta came after about 20 minutes, and baby was still attached to it for a further 10 or so after it was out. That seemed a sensible way of doing things to me.

Last birth baby had Vit K as she had to have her severe tongue tie snipped at 24 hours old, couldn't be done so soon without the injection and it had to be done or I couldn't have breastfed her. I didn't have the injection for the placenta. Four previous births baby and me had the injections.

I had the injection to speed up the delivery of the placenta with ds1, born in hospital. With ds2 and ds3 I had a natural third stage (both home births). The midwives at ds2's birth were fantastic and had remembered that I didn't want an injection so didn't even ask, at ds3's birth despite me making it very clear beforehand that I would be having a natural third stage, a few minutes after the birth one of them said "I'm just going to give you an injection to get the placenta out" and was very surprised when I replied "no you aren't". Apparently she'd never seen a natural third stage before, which I found odd coming from a community midwife tbh!

My baby had vitamin k. I didn't even think about not giving it.
And I had the injection to help with the delivery of the placenta. After four days in early labour/ having contractions, I needed it all over.

I think I will take the vitamin K but hang fire with the placenta and see what happens?

Friend of mine ended up having to have the placenta manually removed in theatre as even the injection didn't work.
Go with what the HCP's recommend rather than some airy fairy idea in a book. (Though Hypno Birthing as pain relief can really work.)
