Possible waters breaking??

I will be 39 weeks this Friday and this morning I noticed a small wet patch on my trousers after I had been sitting having breakfast. This was at about 11.30.

I don't seem to have had any more but could this be the start of my waters breaking or would it be more sudden/noticable?

It can be a gush. But can be a small slow trickle.
Good luck!

Could be...mine leaked very very slowly and I did not have a huge rush just damp knickers...oooo so exciting! However it took DS about 48 hours to get himself in gear and pop out

RedFraggle · 25/04/2007 13:04

Mine was a slow trickle, thought I'd had a little accident but when it kept happening I twigged that I was not suddenly incontinent!

No idea about if it's your waters or not - just wanted to say good luck either way

Thank you!! I will keep an eye on it - if it is my waters then I should notice it happening again then? - Can't wait for baby to get here as am really getting quite large!!

possible TMI for you, but I hear there is a specific 'smell' that your waters have. can't help you with specifics I'm afraid, mine were broken by midwife when in labour both times so I don't have any recollection of what they smell like, maybe someone else can help.........?

Jan2 · 25/04/2007 13:20

I have read that it's supposed to smell 'sweet' - But I couldn't smell anything!

Am about to go out now so I will see what happens!!...

Thanks for your help xx

I thought mine had gone as there was quite a lot of liquid (sniffed it as well), only to be told by m/w I had peed myself.

Could be a hindwater leak, this is like a slow leak, means that the bag of waters in front of the baby's head is still intact, so technically your waters have not broken. Hindwater leaks can carry on and off for several days or even weeks, and can even reseal themselves. If you are leaking fluid and not sure if it's urine, put a pad in your knickers and then after a few hours sniff it - wee smells quite distinctly of ammonia, amniotic fluid doesn't.

If just a teeny damp patch, then to be honest, it could just be discharge, an increase in discharge is normal at this stage, or even - sorry - sweat.

If your waters break "properly" you would know about it, there's usually about 800ml of fluid in there at this stage - and a lot of times women feel a distinct pop as the membranes go.

RedFraggle · 25/04/2007 14:16

If it is your waters then you will continue to leak. I hated it with mine as they never did "pop" they just seeped all day long! I hate using sanitary towels too because of the constant damp feeling so when my waters were leaking out I had to go and change the towel every time there was another seepage. Sorry if TMI! the midwives were laughing at me at the end as I would move, then seep and then go "urgh... got to pop to the loo..."

Kelly1978 · 25/04/2007 14:18

Mine was a trickle with ds1, very slight. I thought they had gone and the midwife insisted they hadn't. Until ds1 came out, and no more water appeared.
mybe you shoudl get it checked, good luck!

BabyMadwithBump · 25/04/2007 17:17

With DS#1 it was a trickle but I didn't know it was my waters, due to being up every hour in the night going to the loo I just thought I was sooo very tired that I was weeing myself, but then I realised it was my waters and the labour pain's started soon after, With DS#2 they popped just before I started pushing!

EllieKthePA · 25/04/2007 17:19

i read it was supposed to smell sweet but my mw swears that waters smell like sperm

Kelly1978 · 25/04/2007 17:42

sperm. Imagine that, your newborn would smell of it!
It is sweet and it's lovely, newborn babies takes weeks to lose that smell.

Thanks everyone for help - will let you know...

i think maybe my mw had been up to something to induce labour just before her waters broke
