Not engaged at term

I'm 40+1 today and have just had a midwife appointment. Apparently baby's still 2/5 engaged, as he was 2 weeks ago. Realistically, what are the chances of me going into labour in the next few days?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

The midwife seemed fairly certain I would be there for my next appointment next week though - is it the case that you are a lot less likely to go into labour if not fully engaged, if you see what I mean?

None of my babies engaged before labour and I still went into labour spontaneously at 40+2 with both. Most second babies don't engage at all and not all second babies are late.

Whne the consuktnat examined me 6days after my due date, Ds4 wasn't engaged at all and the consultant also couldn't do a sweep because my cervix wasn't ready( or whatever the right term is)

He was born later that night.

the baby will come when he/she want to. It could happen today, or you could be waiting another 10 day....

hello! Katy, my LO was still only 4/5 on my due date so don't worry! She still seemed pretty hopeful things mat happen.....saying that, it was 6 days ago!!!!

As Fio says, it can happen in labour. This happened with my first and all 3 of MILs.

DD2 engaged, whoosh my waters broke, seven hours later there she was.

Katy44 · 24/04/2007 19:54

Thanks everyone

at 39+6 DS was the same. 20 hours later he arrived. no idea when the engaging happened! DD's head was completely free the day before she arrived. Though I don't think that's uncommon for a 2nd baby.

mears · 24/04/2007 22:41

3/5 or less means the baby is engaged Katy44.

Katy44 · 24/04/2007 22:41

Well that would be nice - keeping my fingers crossed, but not my legs

mears - he's 2/5 in, 3/5 out, from the way they measure it.

OK - he is still engaged because 3/5 is felt above pelvis. That is absolutely normal.

sweetkitty · 24/04/2007 22:44

DD2 never engaged even when I was fully dilated, once they broke my waters she whooshed out!

Katy44 · 24/04/2007 22:46

She described it as "forehead and eyes"
How uncomfortable must it be to have part of your head in someone else's pelvis! Poor little thing!

Suppose it's better than in your own pelivs though!
