It can give you really bad stomach cramos and make you feel unwell. It can also upset the babies tummy meaning it could pass meconium before it born which is dangerous. It's really not worth it.

No no no no! Sorry to tell you but all this caused my friend was diahorrrea! If anyone else had success then good luck to them, sounds revolting to me. I kept taking the rasperry leaf capsules, no early labour but at least mine was quick - ish

raspberry sorry

I know how you feel about this, its horrible waiting for labour to start, but...I have to say that a) there is no evidence that castor oil will do anything other than give you the shits, and b)and you may find this patronising but its true, so many things happen inside of our body and mind to make a woman start to labour that interfering with one of those mechanisms may start labour but may mean that the other 'things' aren't quite ready. we don't really know how this works but this could be why some women talk of more difficult induced labours. Clearly sometimes there are some very good reasons for starting a labour off, and I have no problem with this, but if all is well take a deep breath and leave well alone. have experienced both labours and the ones that started by themselves were far preferable and that includes one where I did everything I could to get going!

I done the caster oil route when 10 days late with ds, i went into labour a few hrs later & ds was born happy & healthy, i did sit on the loo with poo's for about 30 mins but that was it no cramps, this is only my experience & i was desperate by no means am i telling you to do it i was on time with dd otherwise i probably would have done i again.

When you do nipple stimulation hormones caled Oxytocin are released and Oxytocin stimulates the Uterus to contract when baby is ready to be born. Sooooooooo, logically I'd suggest nipple stimulation,

However, I've never tried it myself. Perhaps if I'd read what I've read now I would have known all about the way hormones are released and how the body works and would have tried it when I got to 42+1 scan edd.... hindsight eh?

Have a look at Sarah Buckley for a potted description

babies come when they are ready and not a moment before

pregnancy can last between 37 - 42 weeks....only 5 % of babies arrive on their EDD ,the vast majority are born before or after !

castor oil - NO ! for all the reasons stated

you need prostoglandins to ripen the cervix...get those from semen, so bit of fun with DH . and oxytocin, which you get from nipple stim. and orgasm.

not raging stomach cramps induced by castor oil

you do not want to labour in pain and dehydrating from being on the loo...

your body will naturally clear itself out

Nipple stimulation is the only thing I know for sure brought on contractions for me.

booge · 16/03/2007 23:35

Mind you with DS1 it brought on the contractions but not enough to start labour and I still had to be induced so I reckon the baby just comes when it's ready.
