How big do you think this baby will be??

Hi everyone,

I had a scan today as I was referred by the midwife because she thought the baby was small. In fact, she already weighs (roughly) 6lb 4oz... I'm only 35 weeks pregnant and I'm told that these are the weeks where she'll put on the most weight.. if this is the case, how big would you guess she'll be by 40 weeks??Shock

No one can say - and no one can accurately say how much she weighs now. Don't worry about it - loads of threads on mn about big babies. It'll be fine.

BelleEsme · 05/04/2017 19:07

I had my 36wk growth scan yesterday and my boy is estimated to be 7lb3oz already! As my midwife said she has seen plenty of women give birth to 10lbers vaginally so really don't worry about it 😳 I'm expecting an 8lber, will be surprised if he's much more than that. It really is only an estimate though so try not to worry x

SummerRayne17 · 05/04/2017 19:51

I agree with the other posters, the weight is only an estimate and from other posts i have read, on other threads, they are not even that accurate in the long run! Don't worry, it will be fine.

MsComplicated · 05/04/2017 19:55

I had a growth scan 2 days before baby was born and they were over a pound out in the estimate.

Justcurious000 · 05/04/2017 19:57

I am wondering whether what we eat I these last weeks will make much of a difference to how much baby gains???

At 35 weeks baby is 7 pound! Tonight I am having pizza Smile . I've only out 12 pound on myself and am a slim build. Baby feels big when he is moving around.

AreWeThereYet000 · 05/04/2017 19:59

Personally I'd ignore whatever the scan says, first pregnancy they said baby would be over 8lb - he was 5lb 13. Pregnancy 2 I had growth scans and they decided I'd deliver a baby between 6-8lbs and she was 8lb 12. My midwife told me once your body won't make a baby you can't birth, whether that's true or not I don't know but just take it easy and relax about it :) x

FatOldBag · 05/04/2017 20:12

They say babies tend to put on half a pound a week at this stage, so if your baby was about 6lb now, in 5 weeks that'd go up to 8.5lb. But, like everyone says, the weight estimates can be way out.

ItsNachoCheese · 05/04/2017 20:14

At 37wks my ds was 9lb 1oz and when he appeared at 41+3 he was 11lb 0.5oz and i had him naturally and didnt tear or require any stitches etc

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 05/04/2017 22:14

My midwives were fretting about DC3 as DC2 had been 11lb 10oz and they insisted I was 'measuring large.' He was 8lb 10oz. Delivered both of them.

Singingforsanity · 06/04/2017 20:36

I had a 9lb baby with a great birth, my aunt had an 11lb baby with an even easier birth! The midwife said the heavy weight helped with speedy delivery. My sister's babies were lighter than mine and both really hard labours ending in C-section. Nobody can tell you reliably what weight your baby will be, and heavy doesn't equal harder labour! Don't stress about it, just make sure you have a few 0-3 month sleep suits! Best of luck!

Rikalaily · 06/04/2017 20:42

My dd1 was estimated to be 6lb 10oz at 34 weeks, she arrived at 39+5 and was 8lb 11oz

Cantchooseaname · 06/04/2017 20:47

36 weeks- growth scan showed 8lb 13oz.
Born at 38weeks- 7lb 3oz.
No idea what they measured!!

Mummyme87 · 07/04/2017 11:17

Estimate is half a pound per week after 36/40 so a guess would be 8 and a half pounds. However take growth scans with a pinch of salt. They can easily for 15% out each way.
My scan at 36/40 was fairly spot on. He was 7lb10oz at 36/49 and born at 41+3 10lb 5oz

DirtyDancing · 07/04/2017 20:51

What percentile is that? You can work it out from that. So mine has been bang on 50th percentile throughout according to the scans so I am expecting him/her to by 7lbs 6-7oz.. 50th percentile

mummy80317 · 12/04/2017 18:48

I had a growth scan the end of January, due date was 24th Feb and we were told baby would be between 7lb-8.5lb when born, I went 12 days over and we had a healthy 11lb 7.5oz baby boy (c-section) don't know we're they got 7lb-8.5lb from

peaceloveandbiscuits · 12/04/2017 19:27

Growth scans said my DS would be 11lbs at 40 weeks. Midwife said he felt absolutely average. He was 7lb 15oz. I'd trust your midwife over a scan.

3littlebadgers · 12/04/2017 19:29

DS3 was scanned all the way through as I had a previous full term still birth. We were told repeatedly he was going to be big. He was only 6lb

Sittinginthesun · 12/04/2017 19:33

My ds2 was measured as 8lb at a 36 week scan. Oh, and apparently I wasn't showing any sign of labour, and they were planning on inducing at 40 weeks.

I went into labour 2 hours later. He was born 12 hours later, weighing 7lb 4oz.

haveacupoftea · 15/04/2017 11:43

Do you not have a growth chart in your notes? Follow the centile and that will give you an estimate if baby keeps growing at the current rate.
