ADVICE PLEASE TRANSVERSE BABY AT 33W********

the title says it all. my sil is 33w pg with her 2nd she had 2nd degree tears and 32 internal stitches that got infected and was pushing for so long that her coxyc(sp) broke. shes now 33w pg and baby is transverse, her mw thinks that a cs is the best option, coz if the baby turns its more likely to be breach. any experience or advice appreciated

a transverse baby cannot be delivered vaginally, at all, ever ! as the presenting part is deemed to be the shoulder and there is just no way to deliver a baby vaginally like that...so , an elective c.s is the only way.

she can request an ECV , to try to turn baby head down....

needs to check the hospitals success rates with that, as it does vary.

a breech baby can be delivered vaginally, but it sounds like she would be unlikely to be comfortable with that . and the hospital also sound like they don;t want to deliver a breech baby.

has she found out why she was allowed to push for so long she damaged herself? was it an assisted delivery in the end?

Hiya, my dd was discovered to be breach about four days before she was born. We spent a morning at the hosp discussing with consultant about attempting to turn her. In the end we decided between us that cs was best option as turning might be too distressing for baby. This was at the eleventh hour though so there's still time for your sil's baby to turn as far as I'm aware - don't know too much about transverse babies though sorry.

For what it's worth - I was terrified about the CS but it was the best thing I ever did. Went into labour anyway on the morning I was booked in and then an emergency went in before me. Was getting quite close to maybe having to deliver after all, thankfully I got into OR and the epidural was brilliant!

shes with the same (terrible tbh) ha as me but she gave birth at a mw led unit, the mw didnt want to transfer her to the main hospital so doctored her notes. she had ds with no assistance but his hand came out with his head. tbh i dont think she trusts the hospital to turn the baby, (their stats are awful)

the hand by the head could well have been the reason she took so long to deliver...

twas lulu, the sad thing is she so badly wanted a home birth this time, it sounds awful but the mw who delivered said she didnt want rsh getting credit for j's delivery have been trying to make her feel better about a cs, after noahs birth she was a bit scared of having one, but she knows the baby has long legs and is bigger than j was

your c.s was different though as it was head circ. that was the defining factor and the poor care in labour

she definiely cannot deliver a transverse baby anywhere but in hospital

breech...well, proabbly need to find an independent midwife to deliver breech at home...

vertex...she should be able to have a homebirth

tbh ive been working on her a bit to stress how unusual my cs was and how a cs will prob be the best option for her and baby. i was really getting somewhere, then MIL freaked out about it, so am having to try again

My ds kept going in and out of Transverse position from about 34 weeks onwards.
I knew when he did it because you could just see this baby shaped lump going across my stomach and everything from my belly button down went in. It felt very strange too.

This happened a few times and the hospital scanned me just before I hit 40 weeks and he was head down.

Fast forward to me going into labour. I was 7cm when I got to hospital and when it came to pushing ds decided to go back up and turn right round into transverse position.
Anyway, they got the registrar and consultant in who moved me around, lifted me up the bed and put me in stirrups.
I had to have an episiotomy but he came out just fine in the end.

So a CS may not be nessecary.

My baby was transverse until 33 weeks, when it turned into breech position, but then at 35 weeks went head down. They can move around until quite late in pregnancy, and very few stay transverse till the end (I can't remember the exact stats but it's something like 1%).

I think it is a bit too soon for her to make a concrete decision as so much depends on if/when baby changes position and whether s/he turns breech or heads down.

If baby turns heads down then she can give homebirthing a go. She doesn't have to have a homebirth if she has a crisis of confidence at the 11th hour or if she needs more pain relief but given all she went through with her first I am sure she could manage the pain!

If baby is breech/transverse then obviously she would have to rethink things and perhaps choose another hospital?

both mine were transverse until much later than 33 weeks. she has plenty of time for it to turn, esp if the baby isn't huge.

My baby - now 2mths old - was either transverse or breech right up until delivery at 39wks+4days.

They were very concerned at the hospital about the transverse lie as it can cause the umbilical cord to prolapse. She moved around a lot, sometimes appearing to be head down, but she never stayed that way.

For that reason I was admitted to hospital at 38wks+6days and an elective c-section was arranged - the earliest this was possible was 5 days later because of the weekend and Christmas Day and Boxing Day holidays (!).

At 33 weeks though there is still lots of time to move to head down.
