karen, not sure what she means by length, but could this be 2cm dilated? I know when I had a sweep with my first I was 2cm, its in my notes.

i sure you measure diameter when talking about dilation.
lenth of cervix shortens as labour progresses.
not much info, sorry, hopefull one of the midwives will post a better reply.

I think, that the cervix has to efface to basically no measurement in length, which means that it is ready to start opening, so it is drawn up and ready to go. Kind of like pursed lips would be 2 cm deep and a wide mouth would have no depth because the lips are drawn back and open.
I think
But waht do I kow, I have a stubborn anterior lip on my cervix which always results in C sections.
HTH
You must be VERY excited karen01, keep us posted.

karen01 · 17/06/2004 21:19

It was today. Things have been started a bit earlier due to circumstances at home, my DH works away and has limited time off and myself DD and DB are moving out to Cyprus early August.

They won't induce properly due to previous elective section DD was born at 36weeks due to problems in pregnancy, including IUGR. This babs weghs about 6lb 13oz.
Sorry probably a bit more info than you wanted!!

Hope you can have a natural birth this time karen, sounds like things are heading that way.......1cm dilated better than nothing! why the section so early though? Is it because your dh is going away? I know how much this can mean in the short term but long term you will have a much quicker recovery if natural. Can you get any extra time to let things take their natural course? (that is if nothing has happened before tuesday!)

karen01 · 18/06/2004 08:12

If nothing has happened it will be section on Tuesday as DH does have to go away, he will be at home for about a week/ or two (he has till end of the month) afterwards but i want him to bond with baby. I have took into consideration the recovery time etc and I am lucky in that whilst here My dd, DB and I live with my mam and I have family and friends to help.

Hopefully though babs will be here before Tuesday as I had my show this morning.
