Afterpains, bleeding, clots

I had DD at 3:30 this morning. Afterpains are awful - especially when feeding. Worse than labour. I had them with DS but nothing like this. Any tips on how to relieve them?

Also, I find that after feeding I stand up and am flooding with blood. And very often big clots. I didn't bleed this much with DS and am wondering if it's all normal. Bleeding in between times is fairly scant though. Just terrified I stand up and a clot slides down my leg when we're out or something.

After pains are always much worse with second, third ect. Breath through them if you can. Usually bad through feeding, try to relax if poss!!!

You willbleed more as you breast feed as this is your womb ect. contracting, wont be so heavy for too long.
Congrats on your baby!

paracetamol every 4 hours - no-one tells you how bad it will be with your 2nd, do they?

Nemo2007 · 12/02/2007 21:44

Think all you can take is paracetamol. I was exactly the same after having DD2 even down to bigger clots but that passed after a day or so. I put 2 pads on to make sure all underwear was covered. Just take it very very easy as you only had her this morning and congrates by the way.

I never tried it myself but do you think a hot water bottle might soothe the pain?

Raspberry leaf tea seemed to help me.

I was told by midwives that I shouldn't worry if I passed anything smaller than the palm of my hand (! gulp!). They gave me strong painkillers in the hospital. It does pass...but took longer than I thought...naively I thought I would push most of it out when giving birth (lol)

TAke ibuprofen as well and codeine - belive me if they are bad as mine it's worth the milk pass on risks. I got pescribed voltarol for the 3rd & 4th but the pains weren't as bad as the 2nd!

I bled far worse with my second. Also clots are normally worse when you have been sitting for a while

Congratulations

my after birth pains with dd2 were like contractions - really bad! but it is a sign the womb is contracting back so try to remember it's a good thing ( difficlult I know). I also had a lot of bleeding but it will slow down soon. Make sure you eat and drink a lot. And congratulations!!!!
