Which is more effective - coil or sterilisation?

I am expecting my third in April and there is no way on this earth I ever ever want to be pregnant again - even if something happened I don't think I would want to go through this again. I am considering an elective section and was thinking about sterilisation as opposed to the coil. what experience do you have of the effectiveness? I had a coil after my first but it gave me really bad tummy pains and they removed it. Concerned that could not have sterilisation done during section, opt for coil and it doesn't work out then have to consider having anothr operation. I really don't want to take the pill and want a more permanent/long term option.

Some people have said on other threads that sterilisation is only 80% effective and the Marie Stopes website says that the chances of getting pg are 1 in 200 - isn't that quite high???

What are your thoughts?

having a sterilisation at the same time as a c.s is slightly riskier, as the tubes are swollen........

i asked my GP about this, and she assured me the coil was virtually the same as being sterilised.

There is no way on this earth he would be sterilised! But it doesn't bother me - really don;t want another baby after this one!

Sterilisation is definitely more effective and I can understand totally whay you feel this way.

Apparently the mirena coil is more reliable than sterilisation but not if you don't get on with it. If you want to be sterilised during your caesarean you must speak to the obstetrician as soon as possible because they won't do it if you ask too close to the birth, in case you change your mind later

I had the mirena coil and got pregnant with it still in place (unfortunately as it had stopped my periods I didn't realise I was pg until about 18 weeks). Most of the medical bods were really surprised (GP, Consultant, MWs etc) though the scan man said that he sees quite a few . DH has since had the snip, as it is a much smaller op for him than it would be for me. I don't think that there is ANYTHING that is failsafe though, apart from abstinence .
