Strep B

Hi Everyone. Got the results of a swab today and at 32 + 2, I've got strep B.
I'm worrying myself sick that I'm going to infect my baby and cause serious harm.
My midwife just told me I'd get antibiotics while in labour. Is there any further precautions I can take to protect my baby?

I've been wondering about this too, and want to get tested. But I would have thought you'd get antibiotics now - not when you're in labour. Antibiotics are safe in pregnancy.

Can you speak to your GP?

I think a course now won't necessarily protect you throughout but maybe a course at 36/37 weeks would be better.

You will be on Ab drip throughout the labour. Baby will be monitored so you will be required to stay in 24 hours min if not 48

I tested for strep b throughout both my pregnancies and had it during my labour with dc2 but not dc2. Both times in for 48 hours. Both babies totally fine.

Tbh there's nothing you can do to prevent it or reduce it - it comes and goes.

Honestly though try not to worry, you and baby will be on safe hands.

I have the same issue, it's standard practice to give the antibiotics via a drip during labour. Ideally 4 hours before delivery of the baby, so no hanging around at home. I've been advised to go in as soon as labour starts.

NapQueen - I've been advised I have to stay in after this one is born, am currently 24 weeks with DC3. I was hoping I'd get out after 24hrs. Is it standard to stay in for 48hrs? Did you LO have to have any ABs? Thanks

I've been told there is no point in getting antibiotics now as it can come back so quick.
This is baby number one so I'll probably be in at least 34 hours anyway

GBS is a transient infection so comes and goes. A huge proportion of the female population carries this. If you are found to carry it at any given point in your pregnancy you will be advised to have IV antibiotics in labour to provide some protection room to baby, although the evidence for this is dubious.
You will be advised to stay in hospital for 24hrs to monitor baby

I have the same issue. Tested positive for group B strep early in pregnancy. The Dr gave me antibiotics at the time but said I will still need IV antibiotics during labour. It's my second baby so I'm just a little concerned he might come a bit quickly to have the antibiotics 4 hours before. My midwife assured me it's not the end of the world if I don't get to hospital in time for antibiotics as they will monitor the baby closely for the first 12 hours (not 24?). She also said it is very common and a lot of women don't know they have it, so it's better to know so they can keep an eye on the baby. I'm planning on making the most of my time in hospital with baby before going home to my toddler!
