Private rooms after birth NHS

I have heard people on here mention that they had the option of paying for a private room in hospital. How did you find out if this was an option at the hospital you chose and what was the process of booking (?) it?
Thank you

I had one - my local NHS trust calls them amenity rooms, I had noted on my birth plan that if one was available I'd very much like it please (you request in labour no pre booking etc). One was available when they were happy for me to leave the delivery suite with DD (I was lucky). £175 one off room charge regardless of length of stay. I had a fairly exhausting experience (v long labour, lot of iv drugs and ABs, eventual EMCS) and all I wanted was peace and privacy. I was in for three nights - best £175 I've ever spent. Nice room, private en suite, brilliant. In the interests of a full picture though, I am quite noise sensitive, frightened by hospitals (entirely without justification, mine was excellent, and something I have been trying to work on), and a bit introverted so I may have placed more importance on a private room than I logically should.
