Trying for VBAC - but what if i'm induced again!!?

DS was delivered 13 months ago by emergency c-section after failure to progress post induction. Horrible experience, can't remember much of the long 23 hours but DH can and is helping me be v.positive about a VBAC next month with baby number two.

I am just scared at the thought of going over again and being told i will be induced...and that a c-section will be on the cards again due to progression failure. My friend was very fortunate to have 2 very quick labours on being induced, I, on the otherhand don't think i'll be quite so lucky.

Anyone?

Why would they induce you during a VBAC? I know they do it, but it really should be avoided.

Have you talked to your practitioner about your fears. They may be able to calm your fears.

read some books by ina may gaskin and sheila kitzinger as they will help to restore your confidence that you can achieve a vaginal delivery

and try doing some visualisations of a good, positive, spontaneous labour and birth..

Induction can increase the risk of uterine rupture after a previous cesarean, so induction may not be on offer to you anyway. When were you induced last time? Did you think your due date was accurate? If you do go post dates this time you've got several options:

a) Accept induction
b) Decline induction at that time and give it a bit longer for labour to start naturally.
c) Ask for an elective cesarean.

Second babies often arrive a bit earlier anyway, but even if he/she doesn't you should still be able to make a choice about what you want to do rather than being 'told' what to do. Induction is more likely to fail if you weren't ready to go into labour - your friend may have been almost there anyway. Vbac has a high success rate so the chance of you getting a vaginal delivery next time is good. I'd second Lulu's suggestions for reading material and I'd also recommend the vbac yahoo group if you'd like to chat to other women who are planning or who have had vbacs.
