If you haemorrhaged after delivery, did you hemmorhage again after other labours? Was it worse, the same, not as bad?

I know every birth is different, but I just wondered about other peoples experiences.

I haemorrhaged 5 days after my first, I didn't have the jab to deliver the placenta. I did with my subsequent births and no haemorrhage.

I lost over 2 litres first time. I still bled a bit second time but much less and didn't need any blood transfusions. They had also prepared for it beforehand, so I had a cannula fitted and cross-matched bloods on standby x

I did with my third and ninth. No real reason that I can recall after the third but with the ninth it was as I didn't get the injection. Baby was undiagnosed breech and not breathing so everyone was in a kerfuffle.

I had the jab but bled immediately afterwards anyway. Consultant is suggesting similar plans to TiredMummy. Interesting to hear it can be a bit "random". Thanks for the replies.

Like tired mummy I had one cannula in for second birth and blood taken for cross matching. They decided this wasn't necessary the third time!

I hemorrhaged with my first and second I was put on the drip though for both labours, im not sure if that had anything to do with it. Hoping I wont hemorrage with this one too

I did badly with my second, for the third and fourth they were prepared and although I did haemorrhage again with both it was less each time and didn't need transfusions.

I did with my first but not with the following 3 births. DC1 tore my cervix on the way out and I lost over a litre of blood.

For the subsequent births it was the same as tiredmummy. I also wasn't allowed in water (shower or birth pool) during labour as it is much harder to quantify blood loss when in water.

Exactly the same as TiredMummy. I also had placenta praevia the second time, so I think they were expecting that I'd need a transfusion but I didn't, in the end.

I had major PPH after my 2nd delivery, for no obvious reason. 3rd Baby they monitored my iron levels to make sure I had plenty of red cells to start with, then I was supposed to have a cannula put in and cross matched blood on standby, but in fact delivered so quickly (80min from first contraction) they didn't have time. Managed third stage and v minimal blood loss.

First time I had a bleed, second time didn't. Placenta was in an odd position first time round, which may have had something to do with it. Or not, who knows!

I had a pph with dc1 and minimal loss with dc2. Both were emcs and 2nd time round I had a cannula and crossmatching done in early labour.

Shameless place marking as I'm 34 weeks with dc2 and had a pph after ds. Going to have a cannula when I arrive as other posters have suggested.

I had an APH (anti partum hemorrhage) during labour followed by a PPH immediately after and a stay in HDU, I had another PPH five weeks later because of retained products infecting my womb. I had ds2 2 years later and had minimal loss around 400ml ds3 I had around a 300 ml loss and I'm not sure what I lost with ds4 but it was minimal and I didn't have the injection with ds4 because he was a prem at 34 weeks so they let the cord finish pulsing before they cut the cord to provide him with a better start. Only problem I had with that is I retained a peice of placenta that came away 2 week later, but luckily caused no problems. I'm now having baby5 and been told I am at higher risk again this time because of the past hemorrhage and the number of children I've had. Every labour since ds1 they have fitted a cannula just incase it happened again so they could act fast.

If you have had a PPH in previous pregnancy you are more likely to have again In Subsequent, but depends why you had one. Tone (uterus not contracting enough), trauma (tear), tissue (retained products), thrombin (clotting disorder). If issue with tone or thrombin then more likely to happen again, if trauma or tissue, less likely.

They would advise you had a cannula in for birth and ensure appropriate measures were taken, and advise for actively managed third stage.

Other reasons, if more than 4 previous births, instrumental, induction of labour, augmentation of labour, high BMI (over 35), pre eclampsia, stillbirth.

My APH and PPH was an unknown reason apparently, but I am convinced it was due to being induced. It all happened very fast they broke my waters about 11am when I was 2cm and had been for some around two weeks (already had a 24 hour pessary prior to that though) and baby born at 3.30pm. My three births after were all spontaneous and my body did it very slowly, 5 weeks from the very first signs to baby arriving with days (5-6) of regular contractions just to get to 4cm.

Induction can cause an APH particularly if you labour quickly, and The APH then puts you at a higher risk of PPH.

I haemorrhaged after my first and went on to haemorrhage again after my second. The second time they were prepared and I had a cannula and various drips running. I was supposed to have a transfusion but for some reason they changed their minds, even though my Hb was low enough. It's put me off having any more.

I had a PPH after my first and was transfused 3 days later as was symptomatic. Labour was extremely long and augmented with syntocin, delivery was forceps in theatre, placenta was retained and needed manual removal. My notes say cause of PPH was uterine atony (due to length of labour and augmentation) and I'm scared it'll happen again. I'm also 34 weeks with #2. Am consultant led this time but consultant midwife says I can use the pool, all being well, as this is a different pregnancy etc. We'll soon see!

Rainbowontheway - all the factors you listed above are causes of PPH and collectively was probably inevitable. As you have had a vaginal birth before you are likely to labour well this time and avoid all of the above, therefore less likely to suffer from a further PPH. Fingers crossed and good luck
