New Data Comparing Hospitals and Outcomes in Childbirth

The RCOG has today published new data after studying regional variation in care. All searchable by Trust.

It covers a lot of things that have not previously been covered in other publically available data.

Included is

• All data split down into first time mothers and mothers who have previously had children (which is particularly useful)
• Data regarding 3rd and 4th degree tears.
• Data split into EMCS and pre-labour CS
• Data regarding induction
• Data regarding VBAC
• Data regarding instruments
• Data regarding episiotomy
• Data regarding unplanned readmission to hospital

Overall, I think this will be of great interest and use to people here.

A friend of mine worked on the report. Very interesting, I have it open now, just sifting through.

My health authority isn't on there for some reason. I'm very interested in some statistics but it may be stuff that wasn't gathered anyway

I was really interested to see this but have just realised its England only. I hope they'll be able to produce something similar for Scotland at some stage. I'd like to know if the poor reputation of our local hospital is deserved, not that I have the slightest choice in the matter!

There could be disparity over reporting of some figures. However there are sum figures on this list I find alarming and very worrying and I hope there are investigation going on there. Others seem to suggest that there is something that Trust is doing right.

I wonder if the 'low' induction rate at Lewisham is due to their outpatient inductions? Mums have prostaglandin treatment then go home to await birth?

Or could have got the wrong trust... Was pretty sure it was that one, though.

Striking to me from OP's post [not having read report yet]:

• nearly 30% of first time mums nationally are induced (45% not; where's the other 25%?)

-nearly 30% of those first-timers who are induced end up with EMCS, compared to 11% in spontaneous labours.

• nearly 25% first time mums have instrumental vaginal deliveries vs. nearly 8% experienced mums

• but not a huge difference in rates of 3rd/4th degree tears for first time mums between assisted vs. non-assisted births [what does assisted mean here, instrumental or induced?]
