Bottle feeding newborn in hospital

I am looking for some advice, I am due my second child in August and I wish to bottle feed straight away this time (with DS1 I tried to breastfeed) but I do not know what I need to do, do I take enough bottles to last while I am there? Do I take ready made formula or can I use powder? Do the nurses help you?

I am having a c section so it wont be possible to get up to sort bottles straight away.

My experience before was different as I was set on breastfeeding but that didn't work out, at the time I was struggling as my son was so hungry the nurse did offer me some readymade formula which I declined as wanted to try B/F so I know its something they can offer.

If anyone can offer any advice that would be great?

You can get mini bottles already made up and sterilised, get a load of them if you can afford them. Much easier than faffing around after a c section.

Get some prefilled ready to use bottles. They do them in packs of 4/6 and are sterile and ready to use.

When my DCs were born the hospital supplied ready made formula - do they not do this anymore? It came in a glass bottle and you attached a sterile teat (also supplied by the hospital). My youngest is 7, so maybe it's different now.

I've bought a pack of 6 ready made bottles which are sterile with teats (aptamil). I'm hoping to breastfeed for at least the first few days but really struggled last time so going to pop them in my hospital bag just in case.

I took the cow and gate starter pack. It has 6 sterilised mini bottles with feed ideal for hospital.

Midwives should be able to give you aluminum bowls + hot water so you can warm them up.

Take the ready made ones with you in case. Ime midwives are happy to provide ready made formula and bottles. I was allowed to go to the cupboard and help myself and choose which brand I wanted. I was also bf and they helped me with mixed feeding. Dds are 2 and 4.

I was out after 24 hours before so fingers crossed I won't be in there much longer this time too although with a toddler at home perhaps I will stay longer this time

When dgd was born last year the hospital provided the ready made bottles, even though she was in there for a week. They were kept in a cupboard by the nurses station and you just had to ask for them as needed. Maybe check with your midwife to see what your local hospital provides? Otherwise, the ones you buy are exactly the same.

I was provided with disposable ready made bottles in hospital and given the right amount of formula but this is because I had been planning to BF and had no bits when baby was readmitted. When I brought some bottles they still provided the formula and also a cold water sterilising unit to sterilise the bottles after washing (there was a 'milk kitchen' and we all had our own unit). Think if you are planning to do it from start you will need to provide bottles and formula but they will provide means to sterilise if needed.

Many hospitals don't provide formula any more (apart from on SCBU) as it is apparently part of "baby friendly". To me this seems like disordered thinking...

My hospital had a no formula policy. We kept a starter pack in the car as we medically had to use it.

They did have a box of sterile bottles and teats. We needed more so my DH just went and bought the ready made cartons.

Our local mlu and the delivery suite/post natal ward provide the little bottles of formula. Think it was cow and gate.

My hospital provided little bottles and gave you a choice from SMA, Cow & Gate or Aptamil. Ask about your hospital's policy but it never hurts to have a "Starter Pack" with you too, in whatever formula you're hoping to use :)
