Any information or experience required remifentanil

Hiya, im 36+2 with baby 2, im looking at pain relief options previous labour required epidural on consultants say so to try and reduce bp. Therefore that's all i had, if possible id like to try something different this time our hospital offers remifentanil im just looking for anyones experiences and recommendations on this or any other pain relief available, Thanks

Remifentanil worked fantastically for me, I genuinely am glad I had it over epidural (not an option for me)

I had it with DD2 and it was wonderful :o. You get a canula in your hand and a little button thing. It only lets a dose out every two minutes but it really is effective.

The only negatives were that it can make you forget to breathe so you also need to have one of those oxygen monitor thingys on your finger and DH and the midwife had to prompt me to take a good breath a few times. And after the birth I had quite bad shaking which the midwife said was the comedown.

It was totally worth it even with those things though. We are ttc DC3 and I will be opting for it again if/when the time comes.

I had it with Dd and am currently 38 weeks with my second. My memory of it 3 years ago was that as soon as they plugged me in I felt completely out of it, saw double and also I got annoyed at having to click all the time. However, it was great for pain relief and you also have the advantage AFAIK that it leaves your body straight away. I am actually considering an epidural this time round so would love to know your thoughts on that!

Thanks :) i had epidural first time although it wasn't my choice due to bp consultant prescribed it and it was absolutely excellent i was terrified about it being painful going in but it wasn't i was then numb i had what the midwives said a very good epidural, downsides are the catheter you might need after as well as during as it can make bladder lazy! It did mine, it takes a good few hours to wear off but other than that I've no complaints no pain but felt stretching as such at crowning, u don't get an urge to push with it either, im told the ones now don't completely block like mine did

I didn't mean to put you off by the way! I also had a catheter with the remi, think it was due to whatever way the baby was lying. I don't have any definite plans in mind cos you never know what's going to happen . I was induced last time and have been told I have to be induced this time as well as I'm 40 now.

Oh no, ive not been put off at all im actually really fancying it, it sounds ideal lots of people said they were really sick that was what put me off before, have you got an induction date or a waiting game?

I've to go up to the hospital on Tuesday and they'll tell me then. I'd love to go into labour naturally but we'll see what happens! Packed my hospital bags today just in case
... I was sick from when they put the pessaries in so nowt to do with the remi.

I had it because I couldn't have an epidural. Was amazing. Husband did have to remind me to breath quite a lot though! (2 years on he still goes on about it!)
