WHAT IS INDUCTION?..... and what happens if the drugs dont work? what next?

am only asking as Sis-in-law has been induced this morning and have no idea as to what she is going though!!

They have said it could start later tonight/tomorrow morning... but what happens if it doesn't??

usually a pessary is inserted to help start things along.

if dilated enough you can jsut go straight to having waters broken

I think you are allowed to go 48hrs before they will carry out c-section

katyjo · 23/11/2006 11:56

Ohh how exciting for you bleamema is this your first niece/nephew?
Hopefully the pessary they inserted will start of labour, if not they may give her another one tonight, and repeat this again once more. If this doesn't work they may put her onto a drip to speed things along, although it doesn't usually come to that.
Labour is the same, although some people find that contractions are faster/more painful but I found induction was fine and I had a quick and easy labour so hopefully your sis-in law will be the same.
Good luck

the cervix is ripened with a pessary..which might be quick..or might take several doses..given 6 hours apart.

if the cervix is ripe, the waters can be broken and a synthetic hormone drip given to stimulate contractions.

then its a waiting game, like with any labour! if the first dose of prostin gel doesn;t work, then it could well be tomorrow before any action!

more monitoring usually as the drip can make the contractions very strong very quickly.....

she will be closely watched and a section is a last resort if labour not going well and baby can;t be encouraged out with ventouse/ forceps.

fingers crossed xx

all that mention on ventouse and forceps is bringing back bad memories for me!!

This will be my first neice/nephew katyjo, very excited!!

Its her due date today.... in being induced as her blood pressure is so high.... felling more nervous today than did when it was me going through it!!

I know time flies when your actually in there doing it...

lissiew · 24/11/2006 11:13

it should be ok to ring hospital. when i was induced my whole family kept ringing coz it had been so long. its only 24 hours after your waters break tho. i ended up having an ecs. dont want to scare you but just call the hospital to put your mind at rest

Congratulations auntie blueamema!
Hope she is not too sore! I'm sure baby is beautiful, cs babies tend not to be so squished, one benefit I suppose!
Love to all
