Kidney problems during labour

Once my contractions began I stopped producing urine. literally nothing came out. At the hospital they didn't believe me when I said I'd been drinking enough so made me drink 2 litres of water. They put a catheter in but still nothing and I was swelling very badly from head to toe. Then they did bloods and said my kidneys weren't functioning. I had to have labour sped up and ended up with a forceps delivery. My body took 24 hours to go back to normal and they had to get a renal consultant to see me. Anyone else have this happen to them? At the time I was too ill to question (lost 2.3 litres of blood in delivery) but now I'm wondering why this happened and if it will happen again next time?

Same thing happened to me. My kidneys packed in as labour started. Took well over 24 hours, if not longer to start working again. Had an emergency caesarean. Swelled up like a balloon too. Couldn't move properly due to swelling in feet and around knees. Ended up on 5 days worth of subcutaneous heparin injections due to poor mobility.
Didn't get referred to a renal physician. 3 years later no problems

Don't know if it will happen again as I'm sticking at one child! Not for this reason alone though

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if I was the only one as I can't find anything about it when Googling and the doctors seemed to not know much about it. Sorry to hear about your swelling it sounds worse than mine as I could move (once the epidural wore off). I did have some injections but only for 2 days. I was meant to have emergency section but they changed their minds in theatre and used forceps. Glad you've fully recovered. I wonder why this happened to us. I want an elective section next time to avoid this as this happened as soon as I went into labour and I'm trying to work out if this will be a valid reason in a consultant's eyes. I think it will depend if this is likely to happen again

I've not heard of anyone else having this either. Funnily enough, I was also told that next time would be an elective section too! It was very odd to experience it

No one mentioned anything to me about next time but maybe I will be allowed an ELCS then if they said that to you. Thanks
