After pains

My baby is 6 days old today and I'm having after pains today where the worse I thought I'd have to ring for an ambulance , I rang midwife who got in touch with my doc to ask for tramadol I'm still waiting to hear back from them ! My midwife and others have said it's really not normal to have them after only one baby which is worrying me that it may be something causing them

I had hideous after pains after my first baby, especially whilst feeding. I tried to be positive about them as its your uterus contracting and that's good. Tramadol will make you very drowsy and out of it if you aren't used to it so be aware of that.

Keep an eye out for flu like symptoms and definitely call midwife or 111 if you aren't happy. Hope they ease off for you.

I definitely had them after each of my DC (far worse with DC2 though- toe-curling, which is quite common apparently, for it to be worse with subsequent children). It was most painful when breastfeeding.

I don't think it's at all abnormal but they do sound very painful in your case so if you felt you should call a doctor then that was wise.

My son is also six days old today! I also had really bad afterpains with my first DC, and with DC2 and DC3 they were also horrendous, but I knew they were coming so started taking ibuprofen 600 literally the second the placenta was delivered. Mine are almost gone now though - they were only bad during the first 48 hours or so. I would definitely keep in touch with medics, it sounds a bit unusual to me for the pains to be so painful at this stage.

I nearly called an ambulance they where that bad last hour n half And I was in middle of bf had to give him to my partner so he had to have formula which has upset me because I still haven't gone a full day breast feeding

Breastfeeding does exacerbate the pain - your uterus is contracting anyway, and breastfeeding also helps to contract the uterus so it's like a double whammy.

I'd had no idea that it's worse with subsequent children, it was properly painful - I wish someone had told me!
