Start of labour?

I'm 38+2 and been having back ache, stomach cramps/period pains and really needing to poo (although nothing's coming) feelings since last night. But apparently baby isn't engaged yet and isn't fully in the right position. Is it possible for labour to start even if baby isn't engaged? And does this sound like the start?

Is this a first baby or subsequent? Apparently subsequent babies can stay floating free until you're well established in labour. It does sound like you're on your way, but keep in mind this part can last days

I'd start timing the cramps, just in case, see if there is any pattern to them. diarrhoea can be a sign of impending labour. Good luck
