How soon after a sweep did you go into labour?

I'm 39+5 tomorrow and booked in for a sweep around lunchtime. DP is working until 9pm so I'd quite like to have a rough idea of how quickly I might need to be back at the hospital if the sweep does work.

I had 2 with dd and neither worked

Notso · 07/04/2015 20:09

I had one with DS1 and went into labour 6 days later.
Be prepared for a show and to feel a bit violated and uncomfortable.

1st sweep nothing . 2nd sweep and sex in 24 hours

Poseypops · 07/04/2015 20:12

Both babies born within 12 hours of a sweep.

confusedandemployed · 07/04/2015 20:13

I had 3. None worked. Started labour naturally 24 hours before induction booked, EMCS 36 hours after that at 40+12

Serafinaaa · 07/04/2015 20:16

Early labour started within hours. I was 40+10 though.

MurielWoods · 07/04/2015 20:17

I delivered about 5 hours after a sweep Smile

newtonupontheheath · 07/04/2015 20:21

Midwife advised me within 48 hours if they are going to work.

I had a sweep in the Sunday afternoon, all Monday in slow niggly on/off labour then once things got going, v quick "proper" labour and DS born Tuesday evening-just outside the 48 hours!

Gr33dyeggs · 07/04/2015 20:23

Sweep friday morning. Baby born Monday morning. Mine wouldn't sweep b4 40 weeks though.

lillamyy1 · 07/04/2015 23:52

Thanks everyone.
They're only doing one before 40 wks because I've had two periods of reduced movements.

My daughter was born within 11 hours of my sweep. I was 40+3

strawberry01 · 08/04/2015 00:35

12 hours later (but was already 9 days overdue)

strawberry01 · 08/04/2015 00:36

Oh and baby was born 30 hours after having it done

lynniegooner · 08/04/2015 00:54

Sweep done Sunday morning, gave birth 6am on the Tuesday

lillamyy1 · 08/04/2015 08:42

Hmm, sweep is at about 12 today... so if it does work, it sounds like it won't get going before properly before DP finishes work at 9? Don't want to end up in full blown labour by myself Confused

Had 2 with dc1 and neither worked, 1 at 40+3 with dc2 at 10.30am stop start labour all day, waters broke 9.15, baby born 11.20.

chocochoco · 14/04/2015 21:42

Had 1 with Dd2 when I was a week overdue and she was born almost exactly 12 hours later.

ohthegoats · 14/04/2015 21:44

I had one at 40+12 at 2pm and it immediately started low level contractions that didn't turn into established labour until 40+14 at 5pm. If I had my time again, I wouldn't have one - it meant by the time I was in proper labour I hadn't slept for two nights.

blackkat1978 · 14/04/2015 23:12

I had a sweep at 40+2 with my 1st & she arrived around 30 hours after the sweep. Take a pad with you as I had a lot of blood with mine!

Weekipper · 15/04/2015 08:54

I had 3 sweeps last time.
1st one at 37 weeks: uncomfortable and did nothing.
2nd attempted one at 40 weeks but I was too tense to let midwife have a go.
3rd one at 41weeks: not uncomfortable and done at 4pm and consultant felt baby's head then contractions started within 30mins, she was born 9hrs later.

Think if you're body is ready then sweep gives it a kickstart. But in my experience if your body isn't ready, they won't do anything.

TheCunnyFunt · 15/04/2015 12:15

I had 2 sweeps, the first one at 41 weeks 'loosened me up' and at the second one at 41+2 the midwife said I was 2-3cm dilated and she'd be amazed if I didn't go into labour within the next couple of days (she also said I should've mentioned that it was my birthday that day and she would've worn a party hat :o ), the 2nd sweep was about 4pm, my waters broke and labour started at 5.43am (I happened to be looking at the clock the moment I went pop!) the next morning, DD's birthday is the day after mine :)

So to answer your question, after my second sweep I went into labour almost 14hrs later.

CherryLips1980 · 15/04/2015 14:11

With DD I had a sweep at 40+5. She was born 48hours later.

I had a sweep on Monday (38+6). So far, nothing, except a bloody show and cramps which got my hopes up. [bitter]

cowbiscuits · 15/04/2015 20:14

I had one mid-morning on the Tuesday at 40+6, early labour started late Wednesday night and I had DS Thursday afternoon. Of course I'll never know if I would have just gone into then labour anyway.

I'd try another one this time. At my next appointment I'll be 40+4, Midwife didn't say if she'd do a sweep then, but I might ask for one.

Good Luck CherryLips, hope something happens soon.

blankfornames · 15/04/2015 23:21

One sweep at 39+6...DS born 3 days later! Good luck!

killthewiseone · 15/04/2015 23:24

I had 4 sweeps in the end and started having contractions almost straight away after the last one. Unfortunately the contractions stopped and I went in the next day to be induced at 42 weeks.
