Last Minute Home Birth with Low risk pregnancy but High Risk Management

Hi all.

I am currently 37+2 today, my 3rd pregnancy.

I am classed and managed as 'high risk' and under consultant led care because of my previous pregnancies history, however this pregnancy in particular is doing very well and this pregnancy itself is low risk, so much so that they aren't even interested in booking me for any more scans.

I don't smoke, I have a healthy BMI and I am 25 years old.

Because I was under consultant led care I have been having growth scans and reviews with consultants. The only concern they showed was that she was breech at a 32 week scan.

By my 36 week scan she is now head down and engaged, now very engaged according to the pain and pressure in my hip region!

I have an appointment later today with the midwife, I intend to 'inform' her that I am planning a home birth (she's going to hate me for saying it so last minute)

I know my rights on having a home birth and that ultimately it is a decision that I make but I just wanted to know if anybody has had a last minute home birth and how they got on with planning and midwife discussions etc. and also if anybody has had a homebirth despite being managed as 'high risk' due to previous pregnancies.

Not quite the same and I don't know whether this will help but I'm now 39 weeks with DC3 and only decided for sure that I was going for a HB at 36 weeks. The MW said I would only be allowed one if I got to 37 weeks, and arranged to come out to my house at 37 weeks to deliver a home birth box.

She has informed the other MWs in the area that I'm booked for a HB, but that's really the only preparation that has been done. So I don't think it's too last minute for you to request one now.

I am fetal medicine consultant-led during pregnancies because of a bad outcome with DC2 (had a home birth with DC1), so high risk in pregnancy just because of that and I booked a home birth with DC3 (although she developed her own unrelated complications and so I was induced early) and with DC4 (although I decided to go to hospital to have her!).

You are now term so could have a home birth. I'd sort it with the midwife today and it should be fine. In my area, they don't deliver anything other than some paperwork. Whether or not you go for a home birth, best to book it and then the option is there for you.

You are term and low risk in this pregnancy so there shouldn't be any reason you can't have a HB or why you would come up against opposition. Women usually aren't booked for them until 36-37 weeks anyway, so you're not even particularly last minute! I hope all goes well.

Thanks all for your input. I went ahead with it. Midwife very supportive, even reviewed my notes for me at the hospital from previous birth to see exactly what went on and called me to tell me that she can't see any reason why there would be a problem. Only thing I have to do is see my consultant for an appointment, I thinks it's basically so he can inform me of the risks and tell me that its against medical advise. But it's all put in motion and I have a midwife visiting me today to discuss the home birth. Had a pool delivered yesterday too. It certainly feels right and is the best I have felt my whole pregnancy! Never in a million years thought I would get my OH to support me either but he's been great!

They might not tell you that it is against medical advice. When I booked home births for my last two (although neither of them were born at home in the end), both of my consultants were happy with that plan and said I was fine for a home birth.
