Ok so went to see consultant today as I'm now 40+1 and he gave me a sweep, told me it could work but not sure it would, I know you usually have a lot of discomfort after but I'm also having a lot of tightening in my hips, lower abdomen and back. going to keep an eye on it but have to ask can a sweep work straight away?

Did consultant say anything else?
When I had a sweep the midwife told me the head was not engaged and that I was not dilated at all, I think, it was a long time ago. She essentially said I was no where near giving birth.
That was a Thursday, my daughter was born on the Saturday. The head wasnt engaged when I went into hospital either, but she was born less than 2 hours later ??

He said my cervix is wide due to previous births but also said babys head is high. I just don't know, my last sweep with my 3rd i wasn't engaged by was booked in for induction 2 days later and the gel worked straight away was in established labour 20 minutes after the gel was inserted and he was born 4 hours later.

Watching with interest! Am 40 wks today. Had a sweep yday and consultant said my cervix is 'suitable'! I had a bit of a show last night but nothing since. Really thought Id be awake all night with discomforts..alas no. Sad

Wishing us both proper labour today!

I had a sweep and then contractions started about 18 hours later. I wasn't engaged but was 2cm dilated apparently.

Hope you and blank are on your way!

Thanks Hoggle. Did you do anything between your sweep and contractions that may have helped trigger something too?

HoggleHoggle · 19/02/2015 09:43

Not that I'm aware of - I think I went for a walk but not a hideously long one. I had reflexology at the same time as the sweep, that's offered where I am. Could be worth trying?

If it's any consolation I remember my first contraction vividly, I was literally just putting the phone down after speaking to my sister and telling her I didn't think the baby would ever get out (I was 40+6). Sometimes it really does just start out of nowhere.

I had a few sweeps from 38 weeks onwards and was told if nothing had started within 24 hours of the SS then it wasnt successful. I had a total of 3/4 with my last being at 39 weeks and I went into labour on my due date
