Hi everyone.

I am 40+3 with my first baby. I had a membrane sweep today and had a few pains afterwards but only slight (hardly noticeable) period pains since. Not had any blood stained discharge or anything like that. Was just wondering if anyone has had one, how long before you know its been successful or not.

thanks.

I had 2 with dd and neither worked and had to get induced instead

I had a sweep and DS was out within three days. Two friends had exactly the same.

I had one then dd arrived the following lunchtime, I'd started to dilate though, they said my cervix had dipped and felt like a polo mint, I was also having mild, regular, contractions.

jlou89 · 12/01/2015 19:59

thanks, i did get pains after the sweep but they seemed to have eased so i am disheartened that nothings going to happen and that i will have to wait until 21st for induction.

the midwife also told me she could feel his head and that my cervix was soft and slightly open. which sounded promising.

Twinges and period type pains the next day then died away and came back full force day after.

Good luck!

I had a sweep when I was a few days overdue.. bloody agony! Wanted to knee her in the face. But baby did start to arrive late the next day/early morning of the day after that.. so I guess it worked, baby should be with you soon :)

Sweep at 37+6 with DS1 and he arrived 5 hours later.
Sweep at 37+6 with DS2 and he came 72 hours later.

Both times my cervix was favourable, however DS2 was just far more laid back about arriving. Slower labor and whilst DS1 shot out like a bar of soap, DS2 had to be coaxed out with a vacumn cleaner.

Good luck OP, exciting times!!

I was 40 weeks on the 11th, had a sweep on Tues 40+2, said cervix was softening but still thick. MW able to stretch cervix a little though. Tightenings later in day but nothing consistent. Show on Weds 40+3. No more twinges. Another sweep yesterday 40+5, cervix 2cm dilated but still 1cm thick. Still no sign whatsoever, no tightenings since Tuesday. Booked for another sweep on Monday. Feeling very fed up, have tried all the old tricks (repeatedly) - walks, curries, pineapple, nipple stimulation (using a breast pump for up to an hour a time), sex. Am booked for a home birth, so desperate to not have to be induced.

I went 10 days overdue , also my first. In that time I had 3 sweeps all incredibly painful. They wanted me to have another , I said no. At the last sweep , I had an older lady and I think an 'old school midwife' who whispered to me ' take laxatives' , I had some Movicol and the very next day went into labour !

I was already way overdue so it could have happened on its own anyway ......

I had 2 with DD. After the first (40+7) I had some cramps and a bit of discharge. I then had a second at 40+10. More cramping aand discharge after but then contractions started about 12 hours later and DD arrived at 40+11

loudarts · 17/01/2015 11:39

I have had a sweep with 4 dc, only one worked and I went into labour an hour after having it done.

squizita · 17/01/2015 13:58

I had 2 and the 2nd one had me go from 1cm to labour in an afternoon!
