Anterior Lip?

When i had my son the midwife briefly mentioned i had an 'anterior lip' but i'm having trouble finding much info on it- was wondering if it's likely to affect further labours in the future? Does anyone have any experience of it?

is this when you are "9 cm dilated" for ages i.e cervix thinning out and opening but just the last bit of opening doesnt happen?

I had that, and looking back I think ds might have been in the wrong position, so wasnt pushing down on the right bits, so not encouraging cervix to dilate fully.

But I could be wrong - totally unscientific!

The anterior lip of cervix is the last bit to go as it dilates = 9 1/2 cm. Totally normal unless it doesn't go at all. Did you get 'stuck'?

My midwife pushed mine out of the way. Is that normal procedure? I was vv grateful!

I had one when I got to hospital as was 9cm dilated.

There was a student midwife there so the staff midwife pointed it out to her.

Mine HURT as it moved out the road and then baby came out in a few pushes.

is it likely to happen again? What do you think? I would think no, because I'm sure exact position/pressure of baby's head has something to do with it

I think its very common i had this 2. All u need 2 do is kneel 4ward and put your bum in the air. This will relieve the pressure of the babies head on the cervix and allow it to fully contract.

I had this with my first when I was 10cm dilated & they made me wait until it went by which stage I had no urge to push at all. However, didn't have it at all with my second.

I didn't get stuck- in fact, nobody but me believed he was coming. My fella went home for some sleep because they said i'd be hours, and they wanted to move me from the birthing unit to the ante-natal ward. I kept telling them he was coming, and eventually a nice midwife had a look at me and said 'oh yes Sian, i saw his head then'...fella came back just in time and he was delivered in three pushes!

Have warned fella he is never to leave me again...i knew i was right!Was a rapid birth, so confused about anterior lip- was it why they didn't believe he was ready to come out? And if i hadn't had one, would he have popped straight out even sooner?!

Anterior lip is just the last bit of cervix to dilate - baby can't get out till you are fully dilated to 10cm. It will not be a problem for future births - just normal.

All women will have an anterior lip at some point. It just depends if the m/w happens to do a VE at the time you have it. If they do then they might mention it to you, otherwise you'll never know.

That's me educated then! May not matter anyway- possibly adopting a 2nd instead, but still...you never know!
