My friend had a 8lb baby 2 years ago & is convinced she didn't tear as she was very diligent at remembering to do her PFloor exercises?
Any opinions on this?

I did them too for my first pregnancy ( more because of bladder control) and still had a 2nd degree tear with dd who was 6lb7oz.

Hadn't heard it reduces tearing before though but in my case it wasn't so.

Although in my 2nd pg I barely remembered to do them and didn't tear.

I'm not much help am I Grin

Ok, perhaps it was just sheer luck for her!

pelvic floor exercises tone internal muscles whereas tears tend to be on external areas e.g. the perineum, etc so I cant see that they would help much in preventing tears

Perineum massage is ment to reduce tearing.

I didn't so much of either and had a graze, I think mine and the babies position made the most difference.

I do my pelvic floor exercises all the time and have really strong pelvic floor muscles. I had 2nd degree tears with both dc, in fact I'm convinced with dc2 that the strength of the one push it took to get her out shot her out so fast that I tore.
