How long typically for cervix to thin/open?

I'm 40+3, 1st baby.
Had a check up today, cervix has started to thin but isn't fully thinned or opened yet. MW explained a sweep would be pointless so I'm playing the waiting game!
How long (if you know) did your cervix take from just starting to thin to being fully "favourable".
Mw said it varies, of course, so this is just interest really...

...annoyingly there's very little about it on reputable British sites.
American ones expect internals to be done from 36 weeks and for you to start dilating/effacing from then (!!) or face induction. Which wasn't the vibe I was getting from the midwife at all.

On my notes she's put the cervix as closed, 2cm (so about 50% effaced?) but still firm.

Hi squiz, I'm really sorry but it varies so much between everyone.
This is dc2 and at 40 weeks I was only 1-2 cm, cervix was short but firm. Now 41 weeks and getting checked again tomorrow so we'll see but doubt much has happened.

Had dd 11 months ago. At 40 weeks had first sweep and mw said I was 1-2cm dilated. I went on to have another 2 sweeps at 40 + 10 I was still 1-2cm the final sweep really got things moving as 24 hours later I had dd. I guess it's different for everyone.

Coffee that sounds like the timing they suggested is typical, ah well she'll have to bake another week or so if they're right!

Showme hope your upcoming sweep goes well. It does seem to vary. Such is nature I guess!

No.01 Mine was closed and firm and back, at 10pm and I was in labour 5 hours later. Baby born 20 hours later.

So I didn't have internal examinations for my other two. What would be the point, except infection risk?

I was 1cm at 1pm when midwife did sweep and DC3 was born at 9pm same day, so it can happen very quickly.

Blimey Starlight and Happy that's a quick turnaround! It really does vary! She stretched me a little but nothings kicked off yet (to my relief as I was at yoga this evening! ). Oh well realistically I've 12-14 days before they intervene with anything like a drip so I guess it's wait and see!

Think it depends on loads of things. Dc1 I was closed firm and posterior, she had a very 'firm' rummage and that set things off. This time it sounded better but so far nothing.
Have warned dh I might not be in the best of moods if tomorrow's doesn't work...
