Stiches have come undone at 12 days post delivery!

So I had my lo, 12 days ago, i had to have forceps and episiotomy which I also tore slightly. We have been keeping an eye on my healing and all was good. Had not looked for a while, so dh had a look and the stiches have come out! Which is probably why it has been twinging. I'm gonna try and get a dr appointment tomorrow but has any one else experienced this?

When I had an episiotomy, I had dissolvable stitches which come out on their own. Basically pieces of the stitches just fell away.

Did they tell you that you would have to go back to have the stitches out?

The stitches take 14 days to dissolve so coming away at 12 days is not an issue itself. However if the tear/episiotomy is still gaping, you have probably had a small infection down there and the stitches have dissolved without the tissue adhering together. This sounds a lot worse that it is, and it will heal on its own usually once the stitches are out of the way. Strongly advise to get it looked at though because you may need a course of antibiotics to help it heal (any remaining infection will prevent the wound from closing). You will be absolutely fine to breastfeed with antibiotics.

Went to the dr's today, I am on antibiotics and may need a referral to the gynaecologist for surgery as it's pretty bad!

Ok give it time, you may be surprised how quickly things begin to heal once the infection is sorted. The wound will heal from bottom up which means it may gape for a little while longer but closes up eventually. The tissue in your perineum is one of the best healing tissues in the human body. You are fine to try the things you may hear about such as salt or lavender baths, cold packs etc but nature in itself tends to be the best healer. Obviously no-one likes having problems like that with their most intimate parts but it will get better. What the gynaecologists would potentiall do is a small operation to resuture and correct the area but this will be done after it has fully healed.

It's all a little less daunting today!

I had a check up, the infection cleared up! Thanks to antibiotics :) the wound is no longer gaping and is healing nicely! So hopefully no operation for me!

My stitches cam away, the wound gaped, and is now completely healed. Good luck! x
