Lindo Wing Consultants

Can anyone recommend a consultant at the Lindo Wing, St Mary's, Paddington? It'd be really helpful to hear about any positive or negative experiences that people have had giving birth at the Lindo Wing and whether it's a good place to choose. Thanks!

When i was living in London I saw a consultant at the Lindon Wing called prof Lesley Regan. She carried some tests because I had reacurrent miscarriages. She was very nice and understanding, she seemed to have a lot of experience.
I have now moved out of London and happily 26 week pg. The consultant i'm under now, said that Leslet Regan is one of the leading consultants in the country.

Thanks for that bubblylion. Lesley Regan sounded great, but unfortunately she is not taking on any more obstetrics patients, so I've ended up with someone called Guy Thorpe-Beeston instead. Fingers crossed he'll be just as good!

I had DS at the Lindo Wing a year and a half ago, and although the surroundings were not really fabulous (decor, I mean) the care I received was unbelievable - I do know that they have been refurbishing the Lindo Wing, so that may well be a vast improvment - I would definitely go back there.

Well 4 years ago when I was having my 2nd, the three big names associated with the Lindo Wing were Mr. Murphy, Mr. Smith and Mr. Teo. Alas my consultant, Mr Smith, who was wonderful, no longer delivers babies privately as I understand it.

I'm sorry I don't know anything about your consultant, lalibela.

But I very much liked the Lindo Wing, and would go there again. The only problem I had was that there wasn't a bed when I arrivedthey were completely full up (no room at the inn!)even though I was very advanced in labor and would start pushing within the hour. There was a great deal of panic and slapstick associated with my arrival. But that was, I think, to do with the fact that a whole ward was being refurbished, so they were very short on beds. But I think it's a great place, and I very much like the fact that it's attached to a fine NHS teaching hospital--I found that reassuring.

Hello! Mr Murphy is my consultant and I can highly recommend him! However I'm only up to week 29 so haven't actually given birth yet.

Was there a particular reason you wanted the Lindo Wing? (If this was in your message pls forgive me - totally forgetful at the mo.)

I was lucky enough to have Mr Smith and was horrified when he told me that he was no longer delivering babies - OMG - shock and horror - have no idea what to do if there is another DC (hopefully)! - but also chose the Lindo Wing as I was very reassured by the idea of a private wing attached to a big hospital with specialists a corridor, rather than an ambulance ride, away. And they also have the best neonatal care in London -

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I saw Mr Teoh for both of my pregnancies and as first baby was breech had a c-section and felt fabulous and healed by 3 weeks. Went on to have DS by c-section and again a quick recovery. Mr Teoh was recommended to me and I have gone on to recommend him to many. My DH said I could only go to the Lindo Wing as the care is second to none and if there is any sort of emergency then there is back up from the NHS part of the hospital. Good luck!

I remember Guy Thorpe-Beeston from when I trained at Mary's (he was a Registrar back then!) and he was very good with a nice manner. Mr Smith was the consultant I worked for and he was the best I have ever met but you would be fine with Mr T-B i'm sure.

It is great to hear so much positive stuff about the Lindo Wing. It is my first choice as it's very close to us and I like the idea of a big teaching hospital. We thought about Queen Charlotte's as well, but having been there for a miscarriage, I'm being superstitious and want to go somewhere new for this pregnancy. Have just had a leaflet from Guy T-B with his total estimate of the cost of a private delivery and it's made my legs go wobbly with shock though! He estimates nearly £9,500 once you add on his own fees to the hospital's. Can that be right or is he talking about Portland level fees?

Lalibella - that is a realistic assessment of the total cost. Bear in mind that you also pay for blood tests, scans and everything else.

I had Mr Teoh - had previously had a miscarriage and found Mr Teoh's portable scanner a real comfort. It is an amazing gadget allowing him to literally keep an eye on the pregnancy throughout. Had a C-section which was ridiculously easy with a super quick recovery.

Hi just had to share this I am 2 weeks pregnant and tried to book in with Mr Teoh and was told he was booked out for next June that made me laugh this city is crazy. I have managed to get in with Mr Murphy though no one I know knows anything about him. Can anyone give me more details? Is he arrogant or condesending? Will he listen to all my concerns even the ridiculous ones? Also has anyone had a C - section with him? Sorry to hijack your thread lalibela.

We got to meet our consultant for an initial consultation before having to make the final decision as to whether to book with him -- perhaps it will be the same with Mr Murphy?

Am not with Karl Murphy myself (am with Prof regan in Libdo Wing, due end May) but friends of mine have been with Karl Murphy and were very happywith him

Hello! I am with Mr Murphy and he has been brilliant - I'm due in a couple of weeks. I think we had a couple of meetings before we had to commit. But he's very knowlegeable and thorough and I have no complaints at all.

Do make sure you find someone you're comfortable with though - 9 months is a long time to see someone you find difficult for one reason or another.

Has anyone else done a tour of the Lindo Wing yet? I went a couple of weekends ago and thought the midwives were lovely, but was a bit disappointed by how small the delivery room we were shown was -- it just seemed to be one bed surrounded by huge stacks of medical supplies and no room to move around.

Lalibela - when did you go? I was on the October 8th tour!

The room we were shown was small too (maybe it was the same tour?) but TBH I didn't choose the hospital for this reason. My choice was made on the consultant first and foremost.

I can't remember if it was this website or another one, but I was reading recently about the private wing at St Thomas' - the Lansdell Suite I think - where apparantly the rooms are AMAZING! Might be worth looking into?

Thanks guys well it all sounds positive so that gives me comfort your right I will wait until I meet him and see if I like him. I know this is off course but has anyone heard of Andrew Mccarthy at Queen Charlottes? he has been recommended to me too.

Jackscat, while I saw Mr Teoh and highly recommend him, I do know women who have seen Karl Murphy and have been very happy with him even for a c-section. The fantastic thing about St Marys is that if they need back up emergency care from the main hospital, it is there and it is a centre of excellence. The rooms at the Lindo wing aren't large nor are they luxurious like at the Portland, but the care is the best and that is the most important thing well certainly for me that is.

Thanks ChicPea thats why I like the idea of St Marys too because I have heard they have the best Neonatal in London. I couldn't care less about the size of the rooms or the food to be honest just as long as the bambino is looked after and the delivery is safe.

Good luck with your decision Jackscat - that was largely why I chose the hospital as well and have felt in safe hands with Mr Murphy. Btw, when he is on holiday (at least since I've been going) Mr Teoh fills in - so perhaps you will get to see both if you go that route.

My query about the size of the rooms at the Lindo wasn't really about wanting luxury over quality of care, which would be a horrible attitude to have. It's just that I've heard that being active in labour can sometimes help the way things progress and so I was worried about being in a room where my only option was to lie down on the bed. I know that several people on MN have given birth at the Lindo, so I was hoping that one of them might be able to say how they found the rooms and whether they'd done anything like take in a floor cushion/ball to sit on.

Yes - I've been doing active birth classes with Janet Balaskas and will be taking in all the gear - ball, yoga mat etc. A couple of people from the class have successfully had active births there so I think it should be fine.

I think the room is small as well but we'll figure it out - leaning over the bed, chair, on the wall etc as well. I probably won't go in until I'm some way through the first stage anyway.

However if you're set on an active birth a different environment might be better? As the LW is consultant led there are no birthing pools for instance and it has quite high rates of intervention? TBH I'm not a hard core active birther, though I found it very useful indeed, and wanted to know I could have an epidural etc right away if necessary.

HTH a bit, even though I haven't actually done it yet!.

Hello, Im new to this but noticed this string about the Lindo wing and Guy thorpe Beaston. I'm 30wks with my first and am having my baby at the Lindo Wing, my consultant is Guy Thorpe Beaston! I think Guy is wonderful and would reccomend him to anyone! He was recomended to me by my sister who had him for her second child. He isn't bossy, he is very comforting but also black and white and tell you how it is. He doesn't mind 'silly' questions and really knows his stuff! I have a tour of the Lindo wing this weekend so fingers crossed is going to be nice! Not a big fan of hospitals. Had a choice of going to The Portland but heard a few dodgy stories about aftercare.

Lalibela hope you don't think I was critising you absolutely a concern if you are thinking of going for an active birth. Hats off to you. I had a C-Section last time so am assuming that I will be straight to the operating theatre.
