I'm STILL bleeding - 8 weeks after birth

Is this normal? I thought it would have finished by now Confused

I had an elective section, had no problems and I feel well and fully recovered from the op. Bleeding comes and goes, sometimes very light sometimes heavier and bright red with small clots. I have very mild crampy pains occasionally.

I haven't had my postnatal check yet so just wondered if I should be worried...

NOt a medical professional, but fwiw my lochia lasted about 4 weeks both times (vb rather than cs, if that makes a difference?). I think it can go on for longer, but I'd be tempted to make a GP appt if you're experiencing some clots/pain, as I would have thought that should've stopped by now.

ASmidgeofMidge · 13/03/2014 10:38

Meant to ask - have you raised with health visitor?

QuestQueCest · 13/03/2014 14:11

No I haven't seen the health visitor for about 3 weeks.

I'm not sure what's happening to be honest.

The bleeding nearly stopped then came back with avengeance at 5 weeks. Then it slowed down again and has come back heavily again this week (8 weeks).

Could I be having periods very close togther? I'm exclusively breastfeeding btw so I thought this would be unlikely. Also the bleeding hasn't actually stopped since birth, it's just lighter at some times than others Hmm

I bled for 8 weeks with both mine. First time I went to GPs about it and he sent me for a scan to check everything was OK, but said it was quite normal for it to go on that long.

QuestQueCest · 13/03/2014 14:21

I'm hoping to have my 8 week check tomorrow. The stupid system at my GPs means you can't book in advance, you have to ring on the day Hmm. And the GP who does the checks isn't in till tomorrow....

I'm just worried because the bleeding is heavier this week and more painful.

I bled for 8 weeks then had my period soon after if I recall...joy!

QuestQueCest · 13/03/2014 14:27

I just want it to stop now Angry

I want to do normal things like exercise and have sex but feel like I can't whilst I'm still bleeding in case it makes it worse.

Also I've spent a fortune on sanitary towels - which I HATE - and can't even use tampons because you're not supposed to. Humphffffffffffffff

That was a strop at the end there btw, not a fart.

I had similar and then the bleeding turned heavier - I had an infection. I would make an appt with you gp if I was you.

QuestQueCest · 13/03/2014 14:39

Did you feel unwell or have a temp or any other sign of infection?

I bled for 9 and a half weeks red blood. No gaps or slow days, always a medium flow with gushes after feeds. My gp told me that it is normal to have prolonged bleeding if you are exclusively breastfeeding and not to worry, but they put it in my notes in case.
They said to go back if i was still bleeding past 10 weeks just for them to check.

GingerMaman · 14/03/2014 21:01

I think I bled for a similar amount time, but if you are concerned can you bring up with your GP?

gubbinsy · 16/03/2014 20:39

I had this - went to dr and they said prob normal but could mean infection (no temp or feeling ill). Gave me antibiotics - I waited another week to see if it stopped then started them - stopped within two days of taking them so guessing was something going on.

MoreSkyThanWeNeed · 16/03/2014 20:45

I bled for about 7/8 weeks and found I bled heavier if I overdid it. We were moving house at the time and now realise I was lifting stuff and running around too much.
Are you looking after yourself?

QuestQueCest · 16/03/2014 21:31

Sorry I need to update.

I had my 8 week check on Friday.

Dr has prescribed antibiotics and if still bleeding after they finish I need to go back for internal and a swab.

He offered to do one then but there was no female dr available, DS was still crying from his jabs, and I was stressed.

Anyway I'm still bleeding today and had crampy pains all morning so they haven't started working yet.

Oh and my notes from delivery say ragged membranes so could this be why I'm still bleeding but the dr didn't seem to know.

I'm looking after myself moresky but just feel rather worn down atm.
