I am 40 weeks tomorrow and have had a show, 1 cm dilated and started to 'efface' (all these techy terms!) The GP said it should start to move quite quickly now but had to have another check today and midwives have said it could be days/weeks - how was it for you? Be interested to know what others have found! thanks

cmm · 09/08/2006 16:39

ooh, forgot to mention the most important thing, had some contractions on/off, sometimes up and down and other times period pains in front, backache and tighenings - when monitored I am contracting but apparently not lots!

sounds pretty good to me. It took 24 hours of contractions for me to get to 1cm .

It does depend on whether it's your first though - if it is, you're deffo on the way.

madmarchingforfreedomhare · 09/08/2006 16:40

it could go either way tbh.

madmarchingforfreedomhare · 09/08/2006 16:41

ah, your first, still could be a couple of days. I would get yourself prepared though.

cmm · 09/08/2006 16:43

thanks for those quick replies - i'll keep having a look at the messages - yes, have my bag packed but trying to think it might be a while incase!

it might come and go over a few days, so you're right to keep busy. Don't wear yourself out though.

Good luck

well, had a few more contraction type pains and stronger too - hopefully they are moving things along! When i did NCT classes we only ever talked about 8-10 hours for first stage (but that didn't seem to include all these contractions/tightenings for days or weeks before!) ho hum. thanks again for your comments.

How do you know that you are / were 1cm ditated?

newmum10 · 10/08/2006 09:58

I had a show the day before I went in to labour properly. 1cm dilated doesn't mean a huge amount as the cervix has to widen and lengthen - I was apparantly 3 cm when I went to the delivery suite with huge pains, but it all happened pretty quickly from then! Good Luck x

cmm · 10/08/2006 11:04

hi - I was examined on Monday and was 1cm then - pains getting stronger and been to the loo! - hopefully things moving but don't think it will be quick, at least not banking on it. Having a beauty treatment/massage today to relax a bit but keep busy on other things. Thanks for your replies again! x
