Can't get a new appointment until 6 January where he will be going into his 9th week - have I missed something really important?

What a numpty!

I can't remember exactly what the check at that stage except weight, I think they also check the baby's hips. They also check that you're okay after the birth.

My ds2 was about 8 weeks when he had his check so it shouldn't make a difference as they'd have fitted you in if it was time critical.

No. Not at all. Provided you and DS feel well. Assuming DS is feeding well and generally content (as much as new borns ever are).

More importantly also that you feel well after birth and that you're not having any issues or concerns.

Otherwise it's 5 mins with GP. Quick measure and weigh of your DS. Check hips and genitals (not sure why) and ask about your well being.

You can weight and measure you DS yourself today Grin
Measuring is easy. Get a tape measure - anything will do and lay him on a changing mat and measure away.
And you can weight without baby scales.
Just pop yourself on the scales as you are take a note of the number.
Then grab your DS and pop back on scales holding him and note that number.
Subtract the first number from the second and you have your DS weight.
It works best with digital scales. If you don't have you could get your partner to look at the number while you hold your DS and you're on the scale. It's hard to see other wise. Grin

Congratulations on your snuggly squishy baby.

Thanks ladies! We did not have a great night plus my sister, her husband and their 3 children are here (staying at my parents) so it's been manic since yesterday afternoon and we slept in this morning!

We're both fine. DS was weighed at the HV clinic last Wednesday and is putting on weight - 8lb 1oz when born and is now 10lb 4oz. Took him to the cranial osteo last Thursday (forceps delivery) and he looked him over and said everything was ok so not worried about anything.

More annoyed that I can't get an appointment until 6 January!

Oh if only he were snuggly this morning! Writhing wriggly over tired little git is what he is! Handed him over to my DH and am going for a nap!

No it is a complete waste of time, apart from the doc listening to heart.

Don't worry as other people have described- GP doesn't do much. My youngest dc was 10 weeks before we could get an appointment for his 6 week check.

take care of yourself...
