Conceiving less than a year after a c section?

I had emergency c section with ds1 who is now 3 months old. I'm 41 so don't have too many years of breeding left in me! I'm ebf but have aleady had 2 periods which I think means I'm fertile again? (does anyone know is that's right? i'm on the mini pill).

I'd like another baby but I've read that you should wait at least a year after c section before trying to get pregnant again. Is that necessary? What are the dangersof conceiving earlier? Because of the difficulties I had with ds1 I would have a planned csection if I have another baby. My first pregnancy was problem free, baby just needed a bit of help coming out!

I was pregnant 10 months after an emergency section. All was fine. I know some who have been pregnant much sooner. You may have to deliver the baby a little earlier. In your position, I understand wanting to conceive sooner rather than later. I've seen people who have lost babies being advised to wait only three months, others in a similar position have been advised longer. I guess if I were you I'd wait six-ish months?

Hi Sister I think waiting is advised to allow the scar to heal fully. If you become pregnant too soon after a section there is an increased risk of the fertilised egg implanting in the scar.

Having said this am not sure you need to wait a full 12 months. My friend lost her baby at term. She was desperate to TTC again as soon as possible. Her obstetrician recommended 6 months. She's since given birth to a healthy girl.

My surgeon told me to wait six months after emcs. However, being advanced of years we started trying after 4 months and got pregnant again 10 months after. My surgeon was happy for me to have subsequent sections and my uterus is reportedly in good nick. I've no regrets.

I had an ELCS, my obstetrician told me at my 6 week check to wait for another 8 months before getting pregnant again. I'm 38 so don't want to wait too much longer either! Good luck!

Cannotbelieveit · 24/10/2013 19:31

I'm 30 so maybe not relevant to you but I conceived again when DS was 4 months old (he was EMCS). Pregnancy is going well so far although I'm classed as high risk due to previous EMCS, high BP and high BMI (35 - hadn't lost baby weight from DS)

From what I understand I may be able to have a VBAC but leaning towards ELCS. Haven't had my first consultant appt yet tho

MoominsYonisAreScary · 24/10/2013 19:37

My consultant told me I didnt have to wait at all after emcs but I wasnt a candidate for vbac anyway, was pg again by the time ds3 was 8 weeks old.

I was told the risk was rupture of the scar during vbac

We were told that it would be nice to wait a year, but it's not a problem if you don't. I know several people who fell pregnant within the year and everything was fine.

MrsSpencerReid · 24/10/2013 21:03

I got preg when DS (emcs) was about 8m, unfortunately had a mc but consultant wasn't at all concerned about the potential gap between. Got preg again when DS was just over a year and have been told a can try for a vbac should I want to! Good luck

FlaseFuckerSpider · 24/10/2013 21:07

I had an EMCS and 12 months later I got pregnant again. I didn't realise it at the time, I have a connective tissue disorder, and I had no problems with the scar splitting.

MrsCDNinUK · 25/10/2013 15:30

I was pregnant 8 months after my c-section. My consultant wasn't concerned and had told me I didn't need to wait any specified time. A repeat c-section was mandatory if the births were less than 18 months apart and preferable less than 2 years apart. It probably depends on the reason for your emergency c-section.

YoMamma · 26/10/2013 08:17

I wasn't given any advice to wait before conceiving after my emcs but, like you, I read that I should wait a year. I got pg again when DD was 6 months. DD2 is due in January and I am planning to try for a vbac and both my consultant and midwife are supportive of this.

seafoodudon · 06/11/2013 22:14

Yes, I wasn't told that. My DDs are 20 months apart (so I just broke this rule) and mws etc didn't bat an eyelid (and I had a successful vbac).

Hi, I'm currently 4 weeks p/o. I had a sad ending to my pregnancy. At 23 weeks I was told I'd dialated and my twins were on their way. Sadly twin 1 died within an hour and twin 2 died 17 days later. I'm longing for a baby now more than ever. They've told me to wait 12-18 months. But I just feel like I can't wait that long, what if it took me long to conceive? I was thinking 6 months has anyone conceived within a year after csection?

Nothando1 · 01/07/2021 22:54

Hello! Been a little while since your post.

Have you tried again?

mrssunshinexxx · 02/07/2021 14:42

I got pregnant 6 months after emc currently 22 weeks consultant advising section due to risk of scar rupture but I feel so conflicted I really want a natural birth but think I would be silly to risk it

Nothando1 · 02/07/2021 15:31

Hey I lost my first baby two weeks ago at 34 weeks pregnant and had to have emc as he was breached. Please let me know how you get on with your pregnancy. @nothando.o instragram

Nuggetnugget · 02/07/2021 15:36

I got pregnant 6 months after c section and everything was fine. No one said anything to me health wise.

Nothando1 · 02/07/2021 15:53

This is very encouraging! I still have a way to go before 6 months and I will of course speak to my doctor but this is encouraging.

mrssunshinexxx · 02/07/2021 15:59

So sorry @Nothando1

mrssunshinexxx · 02/07/2021 15:59

@Nuggetnugget section or VBAC? X

Nothando1 · 02/07/2021 17:31

@nuggetnugget I had a emergency c section. I am hoping to do natural but I think they would want to do section again because of what happened

Daisy155 · 24/03/2023 08:28
