breast milk fever

Anyone had this? Am 4 days post partum and very feverish, how long should it last. Also have excruciating thrush on nipple any suggestions for getting rid Both me and lovely dd on medication. I am so cross i feel so rubbish had a really fast labour, small tear and felt great right after!

I didn't know this existed but I have the same with a ten day old baby, I just thought it was down to the change in weather x

It's not clear from your post but if you have a fever you may have mastitis and need antibiotics today.

wish it was the weather, apparently it starts as your milk comes in. I've never had it before and am on my 3rd baby

This doesn't sound right to me at all. If you feel flu-like, it could be mastitis related. Please see a GP. it's Friday - you don't want to feel like this all weekend

i did think mastitis but i had this with my 1st daughter and remember it being painful in the breast but i have no pains like that

Why not phone a breast feeding helpline? BfN or NCT. They will be able to talk you through your options.

You sound very down. If you can, put your feet up with a drink and some good food and have a lovely cuddle with your beautiful new baby.

Many women get the "baby blues" when their milk comes in with the big rush of hormones. Do you have a DP/DH taking care of you?

I had milk fever when my milk came in- it'll pass in a day or two. I know it's uncomfortable try to keep hydrated.

Thrush wise, keep taking the meds, and put all your muslins, bras, towels etc on a very hot wash (anything that has had contact with your milk / poorly boobs). Change your pads more frequently than usual.

Keep an eye out for sore spots, lumps and redness for mastitis.

There are hormonal hot flushes, and there are infections. Probably best to get a MW or GP to distinguish for you.

I felt shit after having my baby - a chest infection. You have my sympathies.

thank you everyone. I do feel down and weepy too your posts are so kind they made me fill up. My dh is great very supportive and she is a very easy baby so far, taken to feeding no problems long sleeps between feeds, i am lucky. will see how fever is in morning and maybe pop to out of hours doc. Will also try breast feeding cafe.

Hi OP, I felt very down around this time as well. I too had a really easy birth: at home, big baby who already knew how to breastfeeding and has been a lovely soul ever since. But I was so ill and miserable. I was out of breath going DOWNstairs and just felt like a big useless blob sat in a chair, or in bed, that people brought a baby to. Mostly in bed!

Take all the help you can, don't be worried about using GP, OOH or your midwives. At about the same point as you the MWs visited and I stayed in bed sobbing, which was pretty daft in retrospect.

Everything else okay? Bleeding? Pain? Any other symptoms apart from fever?

4 days in is baby blues time. I remember crying because I was sad, crying because I was happy, crying because I couldn't stop crying. Take it nice and easy and if you're still feeling poorly tomorrow or you have other symptoms or it gets worse overnight, please call somebody won't you?

And by call somebody I obviously mean call a health care professional. I mean, I'm sure your Great Aunt Marge or whoever is lovely but they possibly aren't medically trained.

I was feverish about 5 days postpartum. I think I was just overdoing it so took it as a sign to take it easy and it passed within a day or two. Can't help on the mastitis, sorry. Hope you feel better.

I had this - extreme, very physical shivering - and I was freezing - or I felt I was - DH said I felt normal temp. It was awful = had with both - only lasted a few hours. First time was still in hospital (about day 4) - midwives said just hormones. Second time (had forgotten) phoned the OOH - GP said as no breast pain unlikely to be mastitis - but to call again if still going on in about 12 hours. Think (and he was right) that as I wasn't actually "hot" he was not as worried.

So - are you actually hot - or do you just feel fuck awful and shivery? If actually hot then call someone. If not then it may be hormones (still call someone as I recall you do feel like you are about to die - and someone medical saying you will be alright helps).

Re the thrush - I had with DD - was awful. You can get treatment/creams etc from GP - but mine kept coming back. With DS I approached stuff slightly differently - didn't use breast pads and lots of nipple cream all the time which I had been with DD - so actually let nipples breath a bit IYSWIM. I think first time I just kept my poor nipples in warm, moist environment - 'twas never going to go. Also with DS I got breastfeeding counsellor help.

When my milk came in with my first I was fluey

I had the fever too. Went hot and cold, Just as my milk came in. I rang the post natal unit and talked through my symptoms with a midwife to be sure. I think it only lasted a day.

I I just want to come over, wrap you in a snuggly blanket, stroke your forehead and feed you cups of tea. I know, very unMNetty .

thank you FishfingersAreOK would love you to come over and be looked after. DH is very good and this pregnancy have not gone off him like in my others he is so lovely.

I have no other symptoms, stitches fine, blood loss normal, I do have a temperature and am cold and shivery. Spoke to mw, they don't seem concerned, hopefully tomorrow will be back to normal. My mil thinks I just need to get on with it, lovely lady but no sense.

I let myself get run down in the summer too, my dad died four weeks ago and i didn't really focus on my health. One week before the birth got uti and gastroenteritis, and flaming antibiotics left me with thrush.

Hello - yes I have had milk fever with all 3 of my babies. I have been told I have mastitis (or possible a wound infection!) by GPs who didn't know better... I never took the penicillin and the fever passed within a couple of days. This time round I had a sensible CMW who acknowledged it was milk fever and advised to keep an eye on the temperature and if it went much north of 38 to watch for mastitis developing and get to the GP, but it settled down again within a couple of days.

Hope yours does too. So sorry about your dad :(

ps I did cabbage leaves, massage with warm flannels, cool showerhead.
