I had a home birth 4 years ago with my son and it was an amazing experience...I liked that fact that the mw can't really touch you and you are left alone to labour. The water helped with pain and as I was HUGE by 40 weeks it takes all the pressure off. I got into the pool only once I had got to 7 cm and baby was born within a couple of hours.

I am now pg again and am again hoping for a home water birth. I may consider getting out of the water to actually give birth though as I did tear first time round and needed stitches....I think partly because the midwife can't really see exactly what's going on to help you prevent a tear.

All in all I would highly recommend, even if for just a few hours of pain relief...

Regarding the midwife visit...she brought a box of tricks (don't look in there...gulp!) which she left at the house and took me through the detail of what I should do when I went int labour. I also had to sign some things to say that I knew the risks and she talked to me about the fact that I may have to go o hospital if the birth didn't go to plan...all obvious stuff really!!

Good luck and ask if you have any more questions :)
