Will I ever get a phone call from Germany these days which doesn't come up with some insensitive/annoying comment? Major RANT

Honestly I don't know what it is with these Germans! Wink I've had my mum moaning to me about not getting that baby out, my aunt inviting herself over and booking the flight without consulting me, my "friend" telling me what a strange family we are (apparently, this was just after I told her about my dad deteriorating with Alzheimer's Angry) and now my SIL said to me today that surely I should have that induction pretty soon because babies die when they're overdue, they die you know.........

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

Honestly it's that directness, bluntness that's really getting to me -

I've just lived in the UK for too long.

I can suggest some blunt Anglo Saxon epithets usually ending in the word off.

She has got children but had both by c/section at 38 weeks and so thinks this waiting for labour malarkey is a bit anarchic...

oh dear em. She really does want a slap. Angry

now if we're ranting about Germans, happy to join in Wink

emkana · 15/06/2006 22:11

Go on then FIT! Smile

The thing is the Germans always defend their bluntness by saying "Do you want me to lie/be dishonest?" but I feel that respecting other people's feelings might be worth more.

Oh yes, German honesty Wink - dh is fab at it... and SIL's mother (she of Eschweiler) recently had a go - she started off by saying 'right, this has to be said' - went on and on about how I apparently find it impossible to 'just relax' (errr, maybe it has something to do with my life?) and how when we visited her last summer with then 2mo ds she just thought 'OMG' but how much I've 'improved now' [wtf?? emoticon] I am very fond of her and she's one of ds' godmothers, but I could have done without that info, really...

emkana · 15/06/2006 22:28

The thing is they (these Germans, that is Wink) expect you to be appreciative really of the comments, because they're helping you to sort your life out or something.

But I can really, really do without it, too.

I have one friend who is getting a bit fed up with me because I won't talk much about my emotions, or about disagreements I might have had with dh etc. The reason is though that I can't just vent with her, she always launches into full-on analysis, and I don't want that.

Oh, I know... they're just trying to help...

How does the saying go? The opposite of good is well meant - doesn't translate very well, does it? Grin

foundintranslation · 15/06/2006 22:32

(mini hijack - sorry em) Hi CF! How are you? Got my first Listen In on Sat [slightly scared emoticon]
