Hi all,

As my name states I am due on the 23rd December and I was very very happy. I went to see the consultant yesterday and she told me she will be requesting I get induced at 36-38 weeks because of the SPD!!!!. I am so upset about this I am so unsure about not going to full term. She informed my the baby will be fine. Well if that's the case why aren't babies born at 36-38 weeks. sad
I am in pain with the spd and I cant walk more than 30min max now but I don't want a perm baby? If it is classed as prem?? Thanks a very upset and worried mumxxx

My first was 'prem' at 36 weeks due to pre-eclampsia, she was diddy but absolutely fine!!!

I don't think they would suggest it if they thought it would put baby at risk. Ad far as I know, 36 weeks is about when they are no longer classed as premature.

Perhaps talk your concerns through with consultant or midwife?

Its up to you what happens, you know? Your consultant can advise you. The decision is yours.

Babies are classed as term from 37 weeks so I wouldn't be too worried about that. It seems odd that your dr is already planning induction for spd when you don't sound that bad?? (disclaimer : I have had spd, it was horrendously painful and I wouldn't wish it on anyone) I have heard of people on crutches being denied induction because the baby is not at risk??

DS1 was born at 37 weeks & DD at 38 weeks. Both were perfectly fine & healthy and good birth weights.

Over 37 weeks is not considered prem anyway (as far as I am aware), and a 36 week baby will only be taken to SCBU if there is a medical need for it.

Don't let them push you into it. I had spd with dd1 which sounds like it was on the same scale and wasn't induced until more than 2 weeks past my due date.

Things I wish I'd known with number 1 - you can say no to anything.

Agree with 3boys, I also had SPD and was told no way to an early induction .

I then developed pre-eclampsia and had to have one anyway, but that was at 38 weeks.

If you don't want to be induced early and think you can cope then you can refuse the induction.

hmmmm I'd get a second opinion on this. don't think your baby would be premature really and it would be fine but it seems unnecessary to me. I had bad spd with all of mine and went to term with all of them. I was on crutches from 6m with the third and still went to term. they alway jut put notes on my records saying I had spd and not to open my legs too much in labour which, if you give birth standing up, kneeling etc isnt really an issue.

and yes you don't realise this the first time, but they can't make you do anything. if you don't want an induction just say no (I did for different reasons)

I had SPD with DC1. It was at the point where I needed crutches. Then someone recommended an osteopath and it made a huge difference (no crutches and no crying from pain). I still had to be careful, but the difference was amazing. I know of people that it didn't make a difference to, but if you haven't tried it, it might be worth a shot.

If you have then big hugs, because it's awful.

Oh, and there was never any question of induction in my case. It's your body though and if you don't want an induction, that's your choice. Ask what the alternatives would be, best, worst and statistically most likely scenarios.

I am surprised they are offering induction for SPD tbh!

I had it in my pregnancies, with ds1 they did try to induce me at 38wks but it didn't work and I then went home asnd they induced me as I went overdue.

If you are coping fine then its up to you if you want to be induced or not. You might change your mind once you are nearly term. That being said I would not be induced unless there are good compelling reasons to do so I'd weorries re baby.

Being induced is an intervention that can lead to complications and problems for you and the baby, its not a risk free process.

I'm with miaow.....36 weeks is amazing. I thought that was full term tbh.

I have a cerclage, am 32 weeks and baby could come at any time. Have friends who had theirs at 32 and two days ago a friend at 29. Now that really is something to worry about.

My next milestone is 34, would be delighted to get to 36.

WOW miaow the cat.. Are you having a bad day as your post is really out of order for a mum how is worried and in pain!! 1. I don't have a attitude with prem babies I was just asking advice.
to say I " need to sort out this attitude you have that prem babies are some kind of unpleasant alien species though" is bang out of order!!!!!

This is a forum for mums helping mums out not having a go..... DONT bother answering as you have made me feel worse thank you very much!!!!!

Another one here rewlly suprised that you are being offered early induction. I had horrendous spd with ds. Was on crutches from 6 months pg, I genuinley could barely walk. After a few steps it was agony. I could not stand up or sit down without help. I had physio 2-3 times a week, plus the hip and back bands. I could not lie down. I was exhausted and have never experienced pain like it. I would have given anything to be induced early. I went 2 weeks overdue and it got worse and worse as time went on. I spent 5 monghs of my pregnancy in tears beacause of it all. Still there was never any question of early induction.

It is totally your choice, and you need to be coomfortable with whatever you chose to do. I dont think theres much need for esrly induction because of spd ( even though it is bloody awful so I really sympathise) but if you did choose to go down that route, baby would be fine. My feiend had a little girl last week at 36+1. She weighed 6lb2oz and is perfect.

Hope it allngoes well for you, but like others have said, maybe get a second opinion on this as does seem a little odd.

Completely agree with other posters, SPD although painful is not life-endangering to you or baby, so if you are coping with the SPD and would rather grow baby for a few more weeks, that is absolutely your choice! Everything that is advised to you in pregnancy is just that, advice, and ultimately it is your body and your baby. I would be hesitant to be induced at 36 weeks, as to me that is prem, if you are really suffering try and hold out until at least 38 weeks as baby and her lungs will be more mature and ready to change to the outside world. May be completely off beam here but perhaps she is suggesting those weeks as it is so close to Christmas ? I was also due December 23rd (two years ago) - actually gave birth on the 14th and I was practically shoved out of hospital on the 17th as anybody who could be induced or sectioned was having it done that day 'ahead of the holidays'. It was absolutely mental.

Have you asked your consultant what their Christmas holiday plans are ?

I would definitely get a second opinion or stick to your guns if I were you.

Your baby will be fine at 36-38 weeks although 38 weeks would be better than 36 but even at 36 weeks it is most likely there will be no problems.
Ds ws born by emcs at 36 weeks and he was fine and not even that small!

I have had twin 35+1 and also a DD 38 weeks - all fine no special care needed. By the time you get to December you'll probably be glad to meet him/her, and not endure the last few weeks of pregnancy.
