Im 37+4 and I have been getting some pain lasting about 30 seconds twice earlier on which felt a bit like period pains, and then have had it again twice in the last 30 mins which made me have to stop what I was doing. I have some slight lower back pain too. and when i get these pains my belly goes hard.

i haven't passed my plug (at least i dont think i have) and my waters haven't gone. Is this just wishful thinking? or could it be the start. This is my first so I dont really know what I should expect.

Could be very early stages. You might not have noticed passing the plug (many don't).
Has anything further happened???

I was going to say poss BHs too. Towards the end mine were getting quite painful. If you start noticing yours getting closer together, lasting longer, more painful etc then maybe go get checked out? Do you have any midwife appointments coming up at all?

i see the consultant on wednesday, they have calmed down still about once every half hour but not as painful, and a warm bath. guess it was wishful thinking
