Irrational fear of being sick during elcs

I'm having an elcs this week and every other time I have had anaesthetic or epidural ( this is baby 3) I have been really sick and the only thing that stops it is the injection in my large behind.

What happens if I feel sick during the operation? Or can they give me something to prevent it beforehand? I had an emcs with dc2 and was ok I but this was after being sick in labour and having the injection...

This seems so trivial but I am stressing over it

Can you ask this at your pre-op appointment just before the c section where they run through everything with you?

I was given anti-sickness drugs to take the night before and the morning of my ECLS as standard. I was given them at the pre-op appointment and had no nausea.

It's not irrational if you've already had a rough time with them in the past.

Make sure you speak to the consultant. And tell the aneasthetist (sp?) on the morning of the op. It's their job to make sure the op goes smoothly and I'm sure they will do whatever they can to stop you reacting badly to it.

FWIW I'm shit with antibiotics and can't take them without getting sick so my GP makes a note of it on my record. Most people react badly to something I think.

Thanks all. I'm just so scared of not being able to move and having to vomit. I have a horrible phobia of vomit and this just makes me feel ill!

I have per op tomorrow so will ask then, I stupidly hadn't thought of that, think I'm being irrational and hormonal!

I had written on my birth plan that I was phobic of being sick. I ended up needing an emergency c section, and was given very strong anti emetics prior to the section (orally). Did not feel at all sick during the op, although felt a bit queasy afterwards. When I said I was feeling queasy afterwards, they gave me an injection in my thigh and the nausea lifted within 5 mins. My advice is to put it on your birth plan and chat to the midwives beforehand so they know what you want.

Good luck! I'm an emetophobic and didn't actually even consider that an anaesthetic might make me sick at my recent ECLS (I had other fears) or I would have stressed too. So I completely understand.

The anti-nausea drugs worked fine for me. There was a moment I felt sick during the op (very mildly) and I mentioned it to the anaethetist - he must have done something as about thirty seconds later I felt fine again. Then I felt very reassured that I wouldn't be sick.

So do mention your reaction to previous anaesthetic at the pre-op appointment and again on the day, just so everyone is briefed.

When I came into recovery, I was starving. Everyone kept saying "oh you can eat in a few hours when the nausea has worn off" and I was saying "I don't have nausea - I'm bloody starving after fasting for a morning."

I was eventually allowed to eat toast "at my own risk".

Hi. I had an elcs 18months ago. I had a great anaesthetist and team. All said stuff like 'if you feel unwell, dizzy, feel anything, feel sick, just say.' The second I said I felt sick the anaesthetist was by my head with a bowl and said 'really?' and then I was. Bless him. I was terribly British and all apologetic but really - it was fine. One of the nurses dampened a cloth and wiped around my face. Everyone was lovely. Just tell them beforehand of your concerns and they will be prepared

I vomited during my emcs, I hadn't even thought about asking for something for this elcs so thanks for this thread!

I'm making myself feel sick just thinking about it...

Will ask tomorrow and hopefully get some reassurance. Although I hate being sick, it's also the practicalities if I am, as in how to vomit safely when I'm lying flat on my back and can't move!

Just thought I'd update for thise with similar concerns... I did feel nauseous during the op but wasn't sick. However, I was really sick in recovery afterwards for several hours although I'd only drank water. It eventually stopped after an injection of cyclizine and I got to the ward- I tried to eat supper but was sick again but by the next morning I was fine again. So ime vomiting afterwards seems more common! thanks.for all the reassurance

Sorry you were sick but more importantly, how are you and the baby now? Hope you are both good!

Can you tell I was fixated on the nausea?! I have a real issue with it and dread my dc being sick if dh isn't around... We are both good thanks, there were some complications with the surgery but I'm ok. Baby is a beautiful girl who weighed over 10lbs so growth scans were correct and c section was right choice!
