What form(s) of birth control do you use?

This question was raised on the Talk Board of Mumsnet Tower Hamlets (London):

After having 3 cesarean sections a friend of my mine is worrying a lot to conceive again. She has been using pills for 3 years, but she has noticed that they are affecting her health.

Ladies, what form(s) of birth control do you use? Any reliable ones?

I have a Mirena Coil which has worked so far.

Bluemonkeyspots · 08/06/2013 09:17

Dh going in for snip, family 100% done and the pill makes me a fruit loop

noisytoys · 08/06/2013 09:18

I have been sterilised. My family is complete Smile

Good table here on failure rates so going for one of the ones under 1% failure might be the things that poster should consider.

I used to have the implant (implanon) but I really wouldn't recommend that. It's got a very low pregnancy rate but my hormones and periods were all over the place. I used to cry for the smallest things like running out of washing powder... I also gained 3 stone. No advantages for me. I think after giving birth I'll go for the mirena coil.

I've been on the mini-pill for 11 years. I did take cerazette but there is a new mini-pill on the market which I now take, Cerelle, as it has a slightly higher success rate as it contains a higher amount of desogestrel and acts like a combined pill byt stopping the egg from ripening, most mini-pills don't do this. I did use condoms (DD was unplanned) but one ripped and that's how we have DD! But I've been taking the mini-pill for 11 years and haven't got pregnant, so it works for me.

We use a fertility awareness method currently (from the table above it will be the symptothermal one).

Longfufu · 09/06/2013 07:55

Before we where TTC we used condoms, after I give birth DH is going for the snip as our family will be complete.

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 09/06/2013 07:56

Mirena coil. All good so far. I want to be sterilised but they won't do it until I'm 40 in case I change my mind.

The Tower Hamlets poster might like to have a look in the Family Planning forum, where she'll find a lot of threads talking about the pros and cons of various methods.

Fairygen · 09/06/2013 08:10

Mirena coil. Amazing! Had it for 15 years (obviously changed every 5) no problems at all. Absolutely no bleeding what so ever.

coffeewineandchocolate · 09/06/2013 08:13

I've tried loads of pills, injection, implant and none agreed with me. luckily we are ttc for no2

Perseis · 09/06/2013 08:19

Same as longfufu. We used condoms before we started TTC. Once the family is done DH will probably get the snip. Or I will if DC2 is a c section.

Hormonal forms of contraception make me go a bit bonkers, and drain my libido away (pointless).
