When to have a sweep?

Apologies in advance, I know this has been discussed a lot but I'd appreciate further opinions! Midwife appt yesterday at 39+5, everything fine, heartbeat etc. Have provisional appt for 40+1 (next day midwife is at the surgery) for a sweep. Agreed to this yesterday but now am a bit worried-is this too early? I know I can refuse but I feel I need a better reason than "I don't wanna!" Currently on track for a homebirth and concerned that early intervention, no matter how mild, will affect this too! Advice greatly appreciated...

Im also booked in for a sweep at 40+1. Would have one now if I could (38+2). Don't want to be induced because I want to be mobile and have a water birth. At least a sweep may prevent an induction? X

It won't make any difference if things aren't ready to move, and the MW will be able to give you some idea of how effaced etc your cervix is.

I think with HB they are keen to get you cracking on so you don't go overdue? I have had one for 4 out of 5 births all at home and really if it ain't going to blow a sweep will make no difference. That said it can just tip things over and in your position I would have one (well I did!). I had several sweeps with my last and he still came on his own programme so don't worry about it too much. If nothing else she can check out how you are 'down there'.

I had them twice weekly from 37 weeks done alternately by consultant & midwife. Don't think it worked but did mean we knew how I was progressing.

I think they only work if you're ready to go regardless of when they do them.

I had one at 40 +10 and it made no difference!

Thanks all, really appreciate your reassurance! Must admit, and this is completely selfish, I'm hoping the baby can hold out for a few more days-- I have two family birthdays coming up and a grandmother who will be insufferable if the baby is born on either of those! I know there's no control on this front but it's strangely comforting to hear that sweeps won't move a little one who's not ready to go!
