Big water leak after mucus - advice needed!!!

I posted a couple of days ago to say I was getting an egg whitey discharge and got loads of reassuring responses to say its normal in the last month. (I'm now 36+5).
At 4.45am this morning I felt a gush of liquid in bed, then for the next hour or so had to sit on a succession of bath towels to stem the leak. Went to hospital around 7am after speaking to a MW. Was seen by the registrar at 9am who said it's probably 'hind water' as from a scan he could still see water around the baby. Had internal and cervix is closed, fetal monitor showed contractions every 5 mins up to around 35%. So apparently I'm not in labour.
This is my first baby. has anyone experienced anything similar? Any advice on what to expect gratefully received!

Forgot to say - have been put on antibiotics and told to go back to the hospital tomorrow.

because of the risk of infection when you're waters have broken the hospital will keep calling you back in to check you and, if after a certain amount of time (think its about 72hrs max), theres no sign of labour, they will probably induce you.

This happened with my first -its really unpleasant leaking everytime you move isn't it?!

PS -forgot to add that this happened at about 37 weeks for me, DD was fine and arrived very promptly once they induced me.

Good luck!

If it's the hindwaters they may not induce you especially if leak stops. Glad they gave you AB as I find it hard to understand why they would do an internal - THAT increases your chances of infection. Did they sweep your membranes too?

No I don't think they did a sweep although it has to be the most painful internal I've ever had. The MW said I had to be seen by a registrar because I'm not quite 37 weeks but he was very rough. He didn't mention induction but the MW said it may be likely if I don't go into labour by myself.
I'm just confused now because he kept talking about liqour and saying there was still plenty of water around the baby. I got annoyed when he said it could be my bladder as I had only just been to the loo when it happened and then it continued. I'm still leaking now - but when he examined me he said he couldn't see any leakage. I can't help thinking I would have preferred the MW to deal with me.
I'm not in pain although I feel the occasional tightening. So I suppose we just have to wait and see. I really really don't want to be induced and I hate the thought of that decision being taken out of my hands. Betty - what weight was your DD at 37 weeks?

loulou14, DD was 6lb 3ozs (at 37+3) but I don't think she was ever destined to be big as at 6 yrs shes still petite and has followed the same line on the growth charts all that time.

poor you loulou (for the rough internal). Hope it's all happening for you now. My second one arrived at just under 37 weeks and was 7lbs 1oz so they can be a decent weight.

My waters broke early for both my babies, at about 38 weeks. I had stained meconium with ds and went on to have a c-section the afternoon that my waters broke (but he was also transverse oblique, so no way out!). With dd it was the same, but no meconium. I went in and was scanned (no internal) and had the same diagnosis, plenty of water, not to worry and come back the next day. Luckily I didn't have to have an internal (yuk - poor you) or ABs. We went back and forth for three days - I wore ds's nappies!! In the end I was induced and went on to have a c-section (failure to progress). My babies were 6 11 and 6 13. Both now tall, but I think that's in the genes. Good luck - we did all sorts of things to try and get me to labour, but I guess my body just wasn't interested!

Hi All,

Thanks for all the posts. Not much to report. Saw consultant on Friday who took me off AB's - thank goodness. She scanned me and said the amount of water around the baby is at the top end of normal ie loads of it! She said that in itself will probably send me into labour and that she's not worried because I'm now 37 weeks. Still says Thursday morning gush was hind water and said there's no need to talk about induction just yet and she'll see me again in 2 weeks.
Spent the weekend preparing everything for the baby, felt like I was getting really bad period pains yesterday then today - absolutely nothing! Even went to have leg and bikini wax, just in case!

Still getting bouts of mucus and the occasional water dribble that I am convinced is not from my bladder as is clear and there is no smell. Seems to happen mostly at night within an hour of getting up and going for a wee. Had bloods and strep b swab on Thurs and that all came back normal today so just trying to get on with life and stock up on as much sleep as possible.
Am about to go off to John Lewis to buy a nursing bra, then I'll be totally prepared!

hello lulu
I have been having the exactly same thing for nearly 2 wks now. I find i have a gush of water but no smell to indicate urine. I have also been having alot of eggy white mucus and sometimes i have really strong contractions but nothing regular or constant. I am 37wks this wk so i am just glad baby has held on this far with all thats been going on. (Already been in hospital with steroid injections for baby)
I hope all goes well, it wont be long now that all these things going on will be a thing of the past and a new baby to content with Grin
