Just found out am having a baby (gulp...) just worried about getting to hospital - all over an hour minimum - what did other people do?

Thanks

I lived in Catterick (so not as far out!) with my first - just plan accordingly and talk to the unit when you need to go in. Good luck

Home birth? Do you have family nearby you could stay with a few weeks before?

Where I live it's pretty rural but slightly nearer the hospital - about 40 mins drive, maybe slightly longer in rush hour. You have to drive over some pretty high remote moors with no phone signal to get there too.

If you have an averagely paced first labour you will be absolutely fine. I had a quick first labour (under 6 hours) and managed to get back from my parents' house which was nearly 2 hours from the birth centre! It wasn't amazingly good fun but white lines are surprisingly good to focus on through contractions.

My mw told me that an ambulance on blue light can get a pg woman from where I live to the hospital in 15 mins if they have to.

I actually had ds3 at home, as my 2nd labour was super speedy, birth centre had closed and I had visions of giving birth on top of a moor Grin That was a great experience but I don't know if it's something you are ready to think about?

Talk to your mw. She will have experience of dealing with this and I am sure they have things they can do.

Congratulations btw!

Thank you all for your reassurance - think am thinking too much about it... Live about an hour from Northallerton so am sure it will be fine or about the same time from Harrogate (maybe be a bit longer...)

Im in Richmond hun and ive managed to get to Friarage with all 3 of mine so I wouldnt worry too much. This weather does not help at all but it sounds like you have a bit to go yet so it should be fine.

I just hope that they dont shut the maternity unit at Northallerton.Im certainly not having anymore children but I think its insanity expecting pregnant women to travel to Middlesbrough to have their babies!!
